About the Lab

Professor Hyung-Saeng Park's research lab focuses on the integration of embodied cognition, neuromotor control, and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying human perception and behavior. The lab investigates interlimb coordination, haptic perception, and the neural and behavioral bases of self-regulation in food-seeking and addictive-like behaviors, with a unique emphasis on cross-disciplinary approaches that bridge neuroscience, psychology, and traditional Eastern philosophy. A distinctive direction involves reinterpreting psychological and perceptual phenomena through the conceptual lens of 'Qi' (vital energy), aiming to transcend the subject-object dichotomy in cognitive science. The lab also explores bioactive compounds, such as saikosaponin A, in modulating reward-related behaviors, particularly in the context of overeating and addiction.

심리학에서 氣의 문제

마음의 문제를 실증적으로 접근하려는 심리학의 패러다임은 구조주의에서 시작하여 행동주의, 인지주의를 거쳐 신경주의에 이르렀다. 이들 패러다임은 각기 방법론을 개발하여 과학적 접근을 도모하였지만 현대 과학의 일반적 한계와 함께, 주체와 객체를 이분하는 구도를 벗어나지 못하였다. 구조주의와 인지주의는 주체 중심적이고 행동주의와 생리주의는 객체에 편파되었다. 이제 심리학은 새로운 패러다임으로 주체나 객체로의 편파를 극복하는 시도가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 동양 고전에서 나오는 氣개념을 사용하면 주체나 객체 어느 한 쪽에만 속하지 않고 주체와 객체가 공유된다는 점을 제안하였다. 氣개념으로 종래 심리학에서 정리한 지각단서, 변별문제, 인지적 지각, 생리적 기제 등을 재해석하려 하였고. 氣의 영향으로 인한 지각 변화에 대한 실험증거도 예시하였다. 氣를 가정하는 접근(이하 氣모델)은 전통적 형이상학을 극복하려는 포스트모더니즘 사조나 분석적 모델을 벗어나려는 통합적 모델에 부응하는 것이라 할 수 있
