About the Lab

Professor Hyung-Sook Kim's research lab focuses on integrative health interventions that bridge mental and physical well-being, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based, non-pharmacological approaches to mental health and chronic disease prevention. The lab explores the therapeutic potential of lifestyle interventions—such as nutrition (e.g., lycopene-rich diets), physical activity, yoga, and digitalized art therapy—in reducing depression, stress, and oxidative stress markers. It also pioneers digital transformation in mental health care, particularly through innovative tools like digital mandala therapy and personalized mental health apps. The lab’s work consistently integrates biological, psychological, and community-based perspectives to promote resilience and holistic health.

Effects of Tomato Sauce Consumption on Apoptotic Cell Death in Prostate Benign Hyperplasia and Carcinoma

SJR Q2Nutrition and Cancer

Population studies have suggested that lycopene, which is mostly found in tomato and tomato products, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. We previously found that tomato sauce consumption prior to prostatectomy for prostate cancer decreased serum prostate specific antigen, decreased oxidative DNA damage, and increased lycopene concentrations in prostate tissue (Chen et al., 2001). Here, we extended those investigations to determine whether apoptotic cell death and associated Bcl-2 and Bax pr

Community and art: creative education fostering resilience through art
Hyungsook Kim
SJR Q1Asia Pacific Education ReviewOA

While creativity is discussed as a core competence for talented people around the world in the twenty-first century, its exhibition is determined by one’s character. Creativity and character education, therefore, should not be considered as separate matters, but the systematically related matters, and exhibition of creativity, can be carried away by character. The purpose of this study is to apply community-based education through art to elementary school students in an effort to enable the lear

SJR Q1JMIR mhealth and uhealthOA

BACKGROUND: Depression is a substantial global health problem, affecting >300 million people and resulting in 12.7% of all deaths. Depression causes various physical and cognitive problems, leading to a 5-year to 10-year decrease in life expectancy compared with the general population. Physical activity is known to be an effective, evidence-based treatment for depression. However, people generally have difficulties with participating in physical activity owing to limitations in time and accessib

A practical development protocol for evidence-based digital integrative arts therapy content in public mental health services: digital transformation of mandala art therapy
Hyungsook Kim, Yoonyoung Choi
SJR Q1Frontiers in Public HealthOA

Introduction: The fundamentals of digital transformation include the conversion of the traditional method into a digital format to develop a standardized system that collects, analyzes, and processes quantitative data. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the development process and key elements of evidence-based digital integrative arts therapy. Methods: The "Digital Mandala" service in the "Mental Health App" produced as part of a national public mental health project fo

Changes in inhibitory control, craving and affect after yoga vs. aerobic exercise among smokers with nicotine dependence
Hyungsook Kim, Jingu Kim, Minjung Woo, Teri Kim
SJR Q1Frontiers in PsychiatryOA

Objectives: This study investigated the acute effects of yoga and aerobic exercise on response inhibition and the underlying neural mechanisms in individuals with nicotine dependence, along with changes in craving and affect. Materials and methods: Study participants included 30 yoga-naïve adult smokers with moderate-to-high nicotine dependence. Based on a within-subjects design, all participants participated in three experimental sessions: baseline, 30-min yoga, and 30-min aerobic exercise; one

The Effectiveness of Physical Activity Interventions on Depression in Korea: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Ye Hoon Lee, Hyungsook Kim, Heetae Cho
SJR Q2HealthcareOA

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Korea has ranked first in the OECD, with a prevalence of 36.8% of depression. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the effect size of physical activity as an alternative tool for depression symptoms using meta-analysis. A meta-analysis on depressive symptoms was performed on 18 studies published in Korean domestic journals. The moderating variables hypothesized in this study included age groups of participants; depressive symptoms; and frequency, intensity

SJR Q1JMIR Serious GamesOA

BACKGROUND: Depression is a severe illness that has accelerated with the spread of COVID-19 and associated lockdowns. As a result, reported physical activity has substantially decreased, further increasing depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explain the use of gamification principles to develop content for an interactive physical activity game for depression based on clinically proven depression diagnostic criteria. METHODS: We discuss related work in this field, the game design f

An analysis of creative effect on interdisciplinary practices in art education
Hyungsook Kim
SJR Q1International Journal of Education through Art

Abstract The conventional belief that arts education is individual-based and pure no longer holds any meaning. An interdisciplinary approach in this field is becoming more widespread. The consilience between the arts, humanities and social sciences, the arts and the natural sciences, and the arts and art education is recognized as enabling more creativity and thinking skills that are more integrated. Thus, art education has emerged as a core pillar in producing future talents. This study emphasi

SJR Q2International Journal of Information and Communication Technology EducationOA

The objectives of this study were to investigate the feasibility of applying computer vision techniques and to analyse changes in behaviour and movement of high school students during class. The study is performed over two phases. Phase one focuses on developing a feasible method to use computer vision-based techniques in high school classes and phase two focuses on the testing of aromatherapy to affect student’s movement. All camera data was processed and analysed by OpenPose, Matlab and EyesWe

Developing interactive VR-based digital therapeutics for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): a structured framework for the digital transformation integrating gamification and multimodal arts
Hyungsook Kim, Yoonyoung Choi
SJR Q1Frontiers in PsychiatryOA

Introduction: Digital therapeutics (DTx) require structured methodologies to translate evidence-based psychotherapy into immersive digital formats. In response to this need, this study proposes a practical framework for the digital transformation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into an interactive virtual reality (VR) system. Methods: DTx-ACT, designed as a therapeutic intervention for depression, is a VR-based system that delivers ACT through an immersive virtual experience. Its deve

Development of a Conceptual Model of Occupational Stress for Athletic Directors in Sport Contexts
Ye Hoon Lee, Hyungsook Kim, Yong-Hyun Park
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

Previous studies have reported that occupational stress is a determinant risk factor for both chronic diseases and job performance among organizational leaders. Every occupation has its own culture and occupational climate influencing organizations within the industries. Thus, due to the idiosyncratic features inherent in sports, athletic directors may experience different occupational stressors. To date, there has been no comprehensive review of the occupational stress in athletic director cont

Effect of a smartphone-based physical intervention on depression, fitness factors and movement characteristics in adults
Hyungsook Kim, David M. O’Sullivan
SJR Q1BMC Public HealthOA

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has been shown to correlate with mental health and a reduction in symptoms of depression. However, the majority of research has focused only on the effects of either aerobic or nonaerobic exercise on depressive symptoms, while the use of novel technological innovations such as mobile phone-based activity programs and their effects on movement characteristics are underrepresented. This study had two objectives: (1) to investigate how effectively 4 weeks of mobile pho
