About the Lab

Professor Hyungsung Cho's research lab specializes in translational biomedical engineering and neuromodulation, focusing on improving interventional pain management techniques and developing advanced neuromodulatory therapies. The lab investigates the use of real-time imaging and precise drug delivery systems—such as intrathecal gabapentin and fluoroscopy-guided injections—to enhance diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes in neuropathic pain. Additionally, the lab explores bio-inspired actuator technologies, including ratchet-integrated pneumatic artificial muscles, for applications in soft robotics and medical devices. A key theme across the research is the integration of physiological principles into clinical and engineering solutions to improve patient safety and treatment efficacy.

Intravascular Injection in Lumbar Medial Branch Block: A Prospective Evaluation of 1433 Injections

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

The aspiration test with or without spot radiography frequently missed the intravascular uptake of contrast during lumbar MBBs. We strongly advocate the use of real-time fluoroscopy during contrast injection to increase diagnostic and therapeutic value and to avoid possible complications.

The Effect of Intrathecal Gabapentin on Mechanical and Thermal Hyperalgesia in Neuropathic Rats Induced by Spinal Nerve Ligation

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Gabapentin decreases the level of glutamate and elevates that of alpha-amino-butyric acid in the central nervous system. Gabapentin was shown to have antinociceptive effects in several facilitated pain models. Intrathecal gabapentin was also known to be effective in reducing mechanical allodynia in animals with neuropathic pain. In this study, we investigated to see whether intrathecal gabapentin produces antihyperalgesic effects on thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia in neuropathic rats and whe

Ratchet-integrated pneumatic actuator (RIPA): a large-stroke soft linear actuator inspired by sarcomere muscle contraction
Hyun Sung Cho, Tae‐Hwan Kim, Tae Hwa Hong, Yong‐Lae Park
SJR Q1Bioinspiration & Biomimetics

Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) have a wide range of robotics applications, especially in soft robots, for their ability to generate linear force and displacement with the soft, lightweight, compact, and safe characteristics as well as high power densities. However, the compressibility of the air causes a spring-like behavior of PAMs, resulting in several common issues of limited stroke, load-dependent stroke lengths, difficulty in maintaining their length against disturbance, and necessity

SJR Q3MedicineOA

We retrospectively evaluated the effects of 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.4 on postoperative blood loss and acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB).Electronic medical records of 771 patients who underwent OPCAB in our hospital between July 2012 and July 2014 were reviewed, and 249 patients without intraoperative HES-exposure (group NoHES) were matched 1:N with intraoperative HES-exposed 413 patients (group HES) based on propensity sc

The Effect of Simultaneous Electroacupuncture on Ankle Sprain Pain in Rats
Hyun Sung Cho, Mi Sook Gwak, Suk Young Lee, Tae Soo Hahm
SJR Q1Korean Journal of Anesthesiology

Background: Simultaneous acupuncture to two or more acupoints has been used to improve acupuncture-induced effects in clinical practice. However, there is little evidence supporting the effects of simultaneous electroacupuncture (EA). This study examined whether simultaneous EA with 2 and 2 Hz or 2 and 100 Hz can produce synergic effects on ankle-sprained pain in rats. Methods: Ankle sprain pain was induced by manually overextending the lateral ligament of the right ankle in rats. Electrical sti

SJR Q1Korean Journal of Anesthesiology

Background: The stimulation and selection of an effective acupoint is important for producing effective analgesia in electraoacupuncture. This study examined the effect of electroacupuncture to different acupoints and investigated the effective acupoint for ankle-sprained pain in rats. Methods: A Sprain was produced by manually overextending the lateral ligament of the right ankle in rats. Electrical stimulation was delivered individually to five acupoints: bilateral Yangno (SI6s), contralateral

Analysis of the Complications of 6 Brain-dead Patients
Hyun Sung Cho, Kook Hyun Lee, Sang Chul Lee, Il Yong Kwak
SJR Q1Korean Journal of AnesthesiologyOA

Brain death is irreversible coma due to injury of brain hemisphere and brain stem regardless of any treatment. In brain-dead patients, acute respiratory failure frequently results from capillary endothelial damage in the lung and diabetes insipidus and hypothermia occur due to brain stem compression injury. Ultimately, it has been known that the brain-dead patients progress to multiple organ failure. The primary goal of organ donor management is maintenance of optimal physiologic environment for
