About the Lab
Professor Hyunjung Kim's research lab specializes in the design and application of functional nanomaterials and chemosensors for biomedical and environmental sensing. The lab focuses on developing optical nanoparticles—particularly those based on gold, silver, silica, quantum dots, and calixarenes—for the selective detection of metal ions, pesticides, and biomolecules. A key research direction involves understanding and exploiting supramolecular and photophysical mechanisms, such as ICT modulation and excimer formation, to create ratiometric or turn-on fluorescent probes. The lab also investigates the role of signaling pathways in cancer progression, particularly in epithelial-mesenchymal transition and oncogene-driven transformation.

15The present critical review reports on recent developments of optical nanoparticles based on the association of gold, silver, silica and quantum dots and calixarenes. These hybrid organic-inorganic compounds characterized by a thick organic layer self-assembled on the surface of a core of mineral surface atoms take advantage of the supramolecular recognition of luminescent calixarenes to fabricate nanodevices of nanoparticle size, capable of detecting metal cations, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and
Type I insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-IR) can transform mouse fibroblasts; however, little is known about the transforming potential of IGF-IR in human fibroblasts or epithelial cells. We found that overexpression of a constitutively activated IGF-IR (CD8-IGF-IR) was sufficient to cause transformation of immortalized human mammary epithelial cells and growth in immunocompromised mice. Furthermore, CD8-IGF-IR caused cells to undergo an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) which wa
An indole conjugated coumarin 1 for KCN chemodosimeter has been prepared and displayed considerable dual changes in both absorption (blue-shift) and emission (turn-on) bands exclusively for KCN. DFT/TDDFT calculations support that the fluorescence enhancement of 1-KCN is mainly due to blocking of the ICT process.
Synthesis of monopyrenylalkylamine derivative 1 and its fluorescence behavior for Cu2+ in H2O/CH3CN (1:1, v/v) were investigated. Upon Cu2+ binding, 1, bearing a sulfonamide group, exhibited a marked excimer emission at 455 nm along with a weak monomer emission at 375 nm. The excimer emission, driven by formation of an intermolecular pyrenyl static excimer upon Cu2+ binding to the sulfonamide group, is rationalized by experimental and theoretical DFT calculation results.
BACKGROUND: Although a rising trend in the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Asia has been recognized, national-level, population-based studies are lacking. In this study, we investigate the epidemiological features and natural course of IBD in Korea, including incidence, bowel resection rates, survival, and cause of death. METHODS: We analyzed the Rare Intractable Disease registration and Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services claims database, which include information o
The first CuII-induced cyclic guanylation of thiourea anthraquinone (1), exhibiting high selectivity towards CuII over other competitive cations in aspects of fluorometric and colorimetric chemodosimetry, is reported. Moreover, mesoporous silica-immobilized anthraquinone (MSIA) is also fabricated and shows Cu2+ ion selectivity with respect to a color change from red to yellow.
Although this entity of lymphoma appears to have a good prognosis, further clinical experience and long-term follow-up are needed to identify prognostic factors.
A thiol-functionalized rhodamine-based chemodosimeter on platinum films (PFIR) is successfully used for the first time as a molecular switch for the fluorescent sensing of Cu2+. In addition, the colorimetric response (colorless to pink) of the PFIR could be detected by the naked eye as platinum films display optical transparency (transmittance of ∼0.70) in the visible spectral region.
Applying nerve blocks during the acute phase of the herpes zoster shortens the duration of zoster-related pain, and somatic blocks (including paravertebral and repeated/continuous epidural blocks) are recommended to prevent PHN. In future studies, consensus-based PHN definitions, clinical cutoff points that define successful treatment outcomes and standardized outcome-assessment tools will be needed.
Bifunctional (fluorescence and visible light absorption) anion-sensing compounds 1 and 2 based on calix[4]arene platform with 4-nitrophenylazo and pyrene moieties have been developed. The two NHs of the amide groups of 1 bind the fluoride anion through the H-bonding. This changes the characteristic excimer emission and forms a new emission peak from a static excimer. In 2, two OHs bind the fluoride anion, and this changes the characteristic absorption spectrum. The DFT calculation supports the r
The aim of this systematic review was to determine how effective acupuncture or electroacupuncture (acupuncture with electrical stimulation) is in treating poststroke patients with spasticity. We searched publications in Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library in English, 19 accredited journals in Korean, and the China Integrated Knowledge Resources Database in Chinese through to July 30, 2013. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with no language restrictions that compared the effe
