About the Lab

Professor Hyunmi Park's research spans multiple interdisciplinary domains, focusing on medical education innovation, molecular mechanisms in cancer biology, and the integration of art with science. Her lab investigates transformative teaching methodologies in medical education—particularly flipped learning and ICT-based platforms—amid evolving generational and public health challenges. In biomedical research, her team explores epigenetic regulation, such as HDAC3's role in MDR1 gene expression, and surgical oncology techniques like complete mesocolic excision for improved cancer outcomes. Additionally, she engages in innovative humanities-science collaborations, exemplified by her exploration of symbolic representations in art, such as the red discs in Klimt’s 'The Kiss,' through a medical and historical lens. These diverse yet interconnected research directions reflect her commitment to advancing education, translational science, and interdisciplinary understanding.

How the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic changed medical education and deans’ perspectives in Korean medical schools
Hyunmi Park, Young‐Mee Lee, Ming‐Jung Ho, Hee Chul Han
SJR Q2Korean journal of medical educationOA

The deans' perspective changes has shown the possibility of the deans' generation aligning more closely with the current Generation Z medical students. They projected further innovations in teaching and learning methods, especially applying flipped learning and highlighted the need to invest in faculty development so medical educators can be equipped and competent in diverse ICT (information and communications technology) learning platforms. Also, the need for advance preparations in medical edu

Nuclear localization signal domain of HDAC3 is necessary and sufficient for the expression regulation of MDR1
Hyunmi Park, Young Mi Kim, Deokbum Park, Dooil Jeoung
SJR Q1BMB ReportsOA

Histone acetylation/deacetylation has been known to be associated with the transcriptional regulation of various genes. The role of histone deacetylase-3 in the expression regulation of MDR1 was investigated. The expression level of HDAC3 showed an inverse relationship with the expression level of MDR1. Wild-type HDAC3, but not catalytic mutant HDAC3(S424A), negatively regulated the expression of MDR1. Wild-type HDAC3, but not catalytic mutant HDAC3(S424A), showed binding to the promoter sequenc

Minimally invasive complete mesocolic excision for right colon cancer
Hyunmi Park, Tae Hoon Lee, Seon Hahn Kim
SJR Q1Annals of Gastroenterological SurgeryOA

Complete mesocolic excision (CME) with central vascular ligation (CVL) follows the same principles as the total mesorectal excision (TME) in the rectum of following the embryological planes for right-sided cancers. The number of lymph nodes yielded increased with a resultant improvement in the oncological outcomes and by reducing local recurrence rates. Hohenberger's radical CME and CVL and the East's modified CME with D3 lymphadenectomy, which traditionally followed the embryological plane diss

The Journal of Career Education Research

Hyunmi Park, Dai Hyun Kim, Daeun Kwak, HwaMin Lee, Im Joo Rhyu
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the hypothesis that the red, doughnut-shaped discs in Gustav Klimt's iconic painting 'The Kiss' represent red blood cells (RBCs). The purpose is to explore the artistic and anatomical significance of these elements, examining how Klimt may have integrated contemporary scientific discoveries into his work to convey deeper symbolic meanings. METHODS: This interdisciplinary study employed a combination of medical and art history approaches, including biographical

Hyunmi Park, Tae‐Woong Oh, Seung-Ah Han
Korean Journal of Sports Science

Purpose: The need for the lower extremity muscle strength to prevent a hurt from a fall is emerging in individual researches of having been reported so far. But it is the real situation that each research fails to be consistent or that the meta-analytical approach of integrally analyzing the conflicting results is insufficient. Also, the opinions are divided in reality about which exercise intervention program is effective for the lower extremity muscle strength. This study analyzes the effects
