About the Lab
Professor Hyunsoo Chung's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal endoscopy and molecular gastroenterology, with a focus on advanced endoscopic therapies for esophageal and gastric motility disorders, early gastric cancer, and pre-malignant conditions such as intestinal metaplasia. The lab integrates multi-omics profiling, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and clinical endoscopic interventions like POEM (peroral endoscopic myotomy) to uncover molecular drivers of disease and improve patient outcomes. 15Intestinal metaplasia (IM) is a pre-malignant condition of the gastric mucosa associated with increased gastric cancer (GC) risk. Postesophagectomy gastric outlet obstruction occurs in 20 % – 30 % of patients who undergo esophagectomy and is associated with significant morbidity and delayed recovery [1]. Recently, endoscopic pyloromyotomy, also called gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), has been reported, in pigs and in a patient with refractory diabetic gastroparesis [2] [3]. We report a case of postesophagectomy delayed gastric emptying that was successfully treated with endoscopic pyloromyotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a preferred treatment option for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC). However, only few studies compared long-term survival outcomes of ESD with surgery. This study compared the overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival, and complication rates of ESD with those of surgery. METHODS: We reviewed patients who underwent ESD (n = 70) or surgery (n = 114) for SESCC at Seoul National University Hospital from 2011 to 2017.
