A Possible Method to Make the Gamma-ray Spectrum Narrower

It is reported that the width of the rst excited state (7+2 , 37.133 keV) of 121 51 Sb embedded in an alloy ZnSb can be modified by reabsorption of γ rays scattered backward from a platinum reflector. The level width is reduced about 9.0 % at a temperature 4.2 K by a spherical reflector of 2.5 mm in radius made of platinum with a thickness of 0.5 mm. For the case of 133 55 Cs(5+/2 , 81 keV) embedded in a compound CsTiO3, the reduction of the level width is 3.2 %.
