About the Lab
Professor Ilhyun Kim's research spans diverse fields including advanced materials for nuclear energy applications, biomedical engineering for spinal health and arthritis treatment, traditional herbal medicine in inflammatory disease models, historical cartography, and nuclear medicine imaging. His lab focuses on developing high-performance coatings for nuclear fuel cladding using additive manufacturing, evaluating therapeutic interventions for herniated nucleus pulposus, and investigating the pharmacological effects of traditional Korean herbal formulations. Additionally, the lab explores historical representations in cartography and diagnostic imaging in thyroid cancer, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach combining materials science, biomedicine, and historical analysis. The research integrates experimental, clinical, and historical methodologies to address challenges in energy, health, and cultural heritage.

15Zr-alloys are used as nuclear fuel cladding tubes in nuclear reactors. Recently, surface coating of conventional Zr-alloy tubes has been performed to enhance their resistance to corrosion and high-temperature oxidation. FeCrAl is a candidate coating material because of its extremely low oxidation rates and desirable mechanical properties. In this study, FeCrAl was deposited directly on a Zr-alloy using 3D printing technology. The processing conditions, such as laser beam power, scanning speed, a
[Purpose] We investigated the changes in strength of the lumbar area and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) of HNP patients in their early recovery stage after surgery before and after performance of an exercise program, minimal walking, or no exercise. [Subjects] Ninety-six (men=54, women=42) HNP patients who had received surgery were divided into 3 groups: the self-stretching and strengthening exercise group (SG), the walking group (WG), and the control group (CG). CG conducted no exercise. [
Objectives This study was carried out to find the effects of Gami-cheongyulsaseub-tang (hereinafter referred to GCST) on the inhibition of zymosan-induced pain in rats and collagen II-induced arthritis (CIA) in DBA/1J mouse. Methods As an acute inflammatory pain model, peripheral inflammation was induced by intraplantar injection of zymosan into the right hind paw in rats and then the hyperalgesia and pain regulating factors in spinal cord were analyzed. As a chronic inflammation model, the mixt
This research intends to trace the historical changes that had occurred during the post-medieval period until the middle of 18th Century in the field of cartography in Milan. Different methodologies, that had been adopted throughout centuries, show oscillating phenomenon between monumental and iconographic symbolism on one hand, and philological and pragmatical rationality on the other. Furthermore, gradual development of approach show the specification in the realm of cartography in the histori
Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is widely used as an adjunctive treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. Although I has high avidity in the functioning thyroid, and in differentiated thyroid cancer lesions, physiological and nonspecific uptake of I in healthy or benign tissue may contribute to false-positive findings on an I scan. Here, we present an interesting image of RAI uptake in the eye region post-RAI treatment, which has been identified as tear contamination in the arti
Main theme of this paper is the evaluation of the historical significance of Luciano Baldessari's exhibition works mainly during the Fifties. In order to understand the formal and logical basis of those project, his relationship with the historical Avant-gardes and the consequences expressed in his pavilion projects for the Breda Industrial Company are analyzed. The first part focuses on the influence of Italian Futurism, German Expressionism and Italian Rationalism on the formation and experie
