About the Lab
Professor Inyoung Choi's research lab specializes in neuro-metabolic imaging and brain energy metabolism using advanced 13C NMR spectroscopy and in vivo magnetic resonance techniques. The lab investigates glucose transport, oxidative metabolism, neurotransmitter dynamics, and glycogen turnover in the brain under various physiological and pathological conditions, with a focus on understanding metabolic regulation in health and disease. Key areas include cerebral metabolic rate measurements, glutathione mapping in the human brain, and neuroprotective mechanisms against oxidative stress. The lab also explores the metabolic impact of anesthetics and the role of endogenous antioxidants in neuronal survival.

15Glucose is the major substrate that sustains normal brain function. When the brain glucose concentration approaches zero, glucose transport across the blood-brain barrier becomes rate limiting for metabolism during, for example, increased metabolic activity and hypoglycemia. Steady-state brain glucose concentrations in alpha-chloralose anesthetized rats were measured noninvasively as a function of plasma glucose. The relation between brain and plasma glucose was linear at 4.5 to 30 mmol/L plasma
The effect of deep barbiturate anesthesia on brain glucose transport, TCA cycle flux, and aspartate, glutamate, and glutamine metabolism was assessed in the rat brain using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 9.4 T in conjunction with [1-13C] glucose infusions. Brain glucose concentrations were elevated, consistent with a twofold reduced cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (CMRglc) compared with light alpha-chloralose anesthesia. Using a mathematical model of neurotransmitter metaboli
Using a specific 13C NMR localization method, 13C label incorporation into the glycogen C1 resonance was measured while infusing [1-(13)C]glucose in intact rats. The maximal concentration of [1-(13)C]glycogen was 5.1 +/- 0.6 micromol g(-1) (mean +/- SE, n = 8). During the first 60 min of acute hyperglycemia, the rate of 13C label incorporation (synthase flux) was 2.3 +/- 0.7 micromol g(-1) h(-1) (mean +/- SE, n = 9 rats), which was higher (p < 0.01) than the rate of 0.49 +/- 0.14 micromol g(-1)
These results show that CUIP and nobiletin can protect against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death in HT22 neurons via mitogen-activated protein kinases and apoptotic pathways.
Mapping of a major antioxidant, glutathione (GSH), was achieved in the human brain in vivo using a doubly-selective multiple quantum filtering based chemical shift imaging (CSI) of GSH at 3 T. Both in vivo and phantom tests in CSI and single voxel measurements were consistent with excellent suppression of overlapping signals from creatine, γ-Amino butyric acid (GABA) and macromolecules. GSH concentration in the fronto-parietal region was 1.20 ± 0.16 µmol/g (mean ± SD, n = 7). The longitudinal re
Isolates of Trichoderma spp. collected from Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii beds, which included loosened substrate compactness and development of green colour, were grouped into three species. ...

Agrocybe aegerita is an important mushroom cultivated in Korea, with good feel and a peculiar fragrance. A. aegerita can be cultivated throughout the year using culture bottles but is more susceptible to contamination than other mushrooms. Twenty-two pathogens were isolated from the fruiting bodies and compost of A. aegerita, and seven isolates were isolated from Pleurotus ostreatus to compare with the A. aegerita isolates, collected from Gimje, Iksan, Gunsan of Chonbuk, and Chilgok of Gyeongbuk
This study was conducted to investigate physiological characteristics of Trichoderma spp. isolated from Pleurotus spp. Damage tests of Pleurotus spp. and mycotoxins tests of Trichoderma spp. were a...
A novel selective homonuclear Hartmann-Hahn transfer method for in vivo spectral editing is proposed and applied to measurements of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the human brain at 3 T. The proposed method utilizes a new concept for in vivo spectral editing, the spectral selectivity of which is not based on a conventional editing pulse but based on the stringent requirement of the doubly selective Hartmann-Hahn match. The sensitivity and spectral selectivity of GABA detection achieved by thi
