About the Lab

Professor Jae-Hun Kang's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and clinical investigation of obesity-related health burdens and metabolic diseases, with an emphasis on identifying modifiable risk factors and evaluating novel interventions. The lab explores the socioeconomic impact of overweight and obesity, examines the role of lifestyle factors such as sleep duration in childhood weight gain, and investigates herbal and antiangiogenic compounds for effective body fat reduction. A key direction involves translating findings into public health strategies for preventing chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease through targeted lifestyle and nutraceutical interventions.

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

This study was conducted to estimate the socioeconomic costs of overweight and obesity in a sample of Korean adults aged 20 yr and older in 2005. The socioeconomic costs of overweight and obesity include direct costs (inpatient care, outpatient care and medication) and indirect costs (loss of productivity due to premature deaths and inpatient care, time costs, traffic costs and nursing fees). Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, ischemic heart disease, stroke, colon cancer and osteoart

Weekend catch‐up sleep is associated with decreased risk of being overweight among fifth‐grade students with short sleep duration
Chan‐Won Kim, Min-Kyu Choi, Hyoung‐June Im, Ok-Hyun Kim, HYE‐JA LEE, Jihyun Song, Jae‐Heon Kang, Kyung‐Hee Park
SJR Q1Journal of Sleep Research

Previous studies have reported a relationship between short sleep duration and childhood overweight. Although school-aged children tend to compensate for weekday sleep deficit by increasing weekend sleep duration, the association between weekend catch-up sleep and childhood overweight remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between weekend catch-up sleep and being overweight in children. A total of 936 school children (48.2% boys) aged 10 or 11 years participated in this sc

BMC Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: YY-312 is a herbal extract powder from Imperata cylindrica Beauvois, Citrus unshiu Markovich, and Evodia officinalis Dode, which have health promoting effects, including body fat reduction. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of YY-312 for body fat reduction in overweight adults. METHODS: . The daily dose of YY-312 was 2400 mg (containing 1800 mg of active herbal extract and 600 mg of cyclodextrin). Primary outcomes were reductions in body fat mass (BFM) and body fat percent

In Young Cho, Yoosoo Chang, Jae‐Heon Kang, Yejin Kim, Eunju Sung, Hocheol Shin, Sarah H. Wild, Christopher D. Byrne, Seungho Ryu
SJR Q1The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & MetabolismOA

CONTEXT: The association of menstrual cycle length and irregularity with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined this association in large cross-sectional and cohort studies. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 72 092 women younger than 40 years who underwent routine health examinations; the longitudinal analysis included the subset of 51 118 women without NAFLD at baseline. Long or irregular cycles were defined as menstrual cycles of 40 d

Antiangiogenic Herbal Composition Ob‐X Reduces Abdominal Visceral Fat in Humans: A Randomized, Double‐Blind, Placebo‐Controlled Study
Jae‐Heon Kang, In Sun Jeong, Min-Young Kim
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative MedicineOA

Adipose tissue growth is angiogenesis‐dependent, and angiogenesis inhibitors can regulate adipose tissue mass by cutting off the blood supply. We examined whether antiangiogenic herbal composition Ob‐X can reduce fast‐growing abdominal fat, especially visceral fat in humans by inhibiting angiogenesis. Eighty abdominally obese subjects (body mass index: 25‐29.9 kg/m 2 , waist circumference: exceeding 90 cm for males and 85 cm for females) participated in a 12‐week randomized, double‐blind, placeb
