About the Lab
Professor Jae-hyun Jeong's research lab focuses on the intersection of metabolic and musculoskeletal health in aging populations, particularly postmenopausal women. The lab investigates hormonal influences on osteoarthritis, gout, and metabolic syndrome, with an emphasis on how menopausal hormone therapy affects serum uric acid levels, joint health, and mental health outcomes. Key research directions include the epidemiological and physiological links between hormonal changes, chronic inflammation, and systemic conditions such as insulin resistance, kidney disease, and mental health disorders. The lab utilizes large-scale national health surveys to explore population-level trends and clinical interventions, including aquatic exercise for respiratory function in spinal cord injury patients.

Estrogen deficiency is known to affect the development of OA, and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is suggested to be related to the development of OA. However, the relationship between knee OA and MHT remains controversial. The association between knee OA prevalence and MHT was investigated using large-scale national data. METHODS: Data were collected from 4,766 postmenopa
OBJECTIVE: Serum uric acid levels increase in postmenopausal women, but decrease when hormone therapy (HT) is administered. No study has, however, evaluated the effects of different types of HT on serum uric acid levels. We therefore examined whether estrogen therapy (ET), estrogen plus progestogen therapy (EPT), and tibolone use affected serum uric acid levels in this population. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of postmenopausal women. From 2005 to 2015, postmenopausal women
AIM: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease and has become a major health problem in recent years. OA causes chronic pain and disability and can induce mental disorders such as stress perception, depression and suicidal ideation. We investigated the incidence of perceived stress, depressed mood and suicidal ideation in OA patients, using the 2010-2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). METHOD: A total of 8271 participants were included (3580 male and 4691 female)
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with gout was 50.8%, which is higher than the prevalence in the general Korean population. Hyperuricemia in gout patients was correlated with metabolic syndrome and CKD. Insulin resistance may provide clues to better understand the relationship between metabolic syndrome, CKD, and gout.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a considerable health problem worldwide. It is known to be associated with certain occupational risk factors. We examined the prevalence rate of OA by occupational cluster. Data were collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2010-2013). The total number of unweighted sample size was 9,905 participants: 4,460 men and 5,445 women, and OA prevalence was 5.3% and 18.4% respectively. OA patients were defined as participants with knee/hip joint
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of aquatic exercise on pulmonary function of patients with spinal cord injury. [Subjects] The subjects were randomly allocated to an aqua group (n=10) and a land group (n=10). [Methods] Both groups trained for 60 minutes, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Pulmonary function was assessed by measuring the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory flow rate (FER), force expiratory volume at one second (FEV1) and force expiratory volume
Rapid and highly sensitive determination of nicotine in a PDMS microfluidic channel was investigated using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). A three-dimensional PDMS microfluidic channel was fabricated for this purpose. This channel shows a high mixing efficiency because the transverse and vertical dispersions of the fluid occur simultaneously through the upper and lower zig zag-type blocks. A higher efficiency of mixing could also be obtained by splitting each of the confluent streams
The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of eligible studies and to derive a precise estimate of the association between interleukin 10 (IL10) polymorphisms and susceptibility to autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). Meta-analyses were conducted on the associations between AITD and the -1082 G/A (rs1800896), -819 C/T (rs1800871) and -592 C/A (rs1800872) polymorphisms in IL10, and the haplotype of these polymorphisms and AITD. A total of 2903 AITD patients and 3060 controls in 10 eligibl
BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is known to be associated with coronary artery diseases (CAD). Previous studies of the association between RA and CAD were reported mainly in non-Asian groups. We aimed to examine the prevalence of RA and the relationship between RA and CAD in South Korea. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study by using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which collected data for four years between 2008 and 2012. A total of 25,828 el
STP and CT are encouragingly efficacious as first-line treatments for <i>H. pylori</i> infection. Therefore, adding probiotics to STT may be a feasible option to avoid side effects.
