About the Lab
Professor Jae-won Park's research lab specializes in microfluidic systems and advanced materials for biomedical and biotechnological applications. The lab focuses on developing innovative microfluidic platforms for high-throughput analysis, cell culture, and axon-glia interaction studies, particularly in the central nervous system. It also explores functional materials such as doped titanium dioxide for optoelectronic applications and microalgae-based bioproduction systems for natural astaxanthin. The integration of microfabrication techniques with biological systems defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

15Formation of myelin sheaths by oligodendrocytes (OLs) in the central nervous system (CNS) is essential for rapid nerve impulse conduction. Reciprocal signaling between axons and OLs orchestrates myelinogenesis but remains largely elusive. In this study, we present a multi-compartment CNS neuron-glia microfluidic co-culture platform. The platform is capable of conducting parallel localized drug and biomolecule treatments while carrying out multiple co-culture conditions in a single device for stu
There have been growing interests in droplet-based microfluidics due to its capability to outperform conventional biological assays by providing various advantages, such as precise handling of liquid/cell samples, fast reaction time, and extremely high-throughput analysis/screening. The droplet-based microfluidics utilizes the interaction between the interfacial tension and the fluidic shear force to break continuous fluids into uniform-sized segments within a microchannel. In this paper, the ef
ABSTRACT Selected mixes consisting of Bf [high‐beef (29%) low‐fat (2.96%)], bf [low‐beef (20%) low‐fat] and BF [high‐beef high‐fat (5%)] which incorporated raw beef, defatted soy flour, and corn starch were extruded in a single‐screw extruder. The products had no flavor additives and trained sensory panelists detected hay‐like, beany or grainy flavors. Bf extrudate was more expanded than BF extrudate and rated least hard by the sensory panel, whereas bf extrudate was least susceptible to lipid o
A poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) patterning method based on a photoresist lift-off technique to make an electrical insulation layer with selective openings is presented. The method enables creating PDMS patterns with small features and various thicknesses without any limitation in the designs and without the need for complicated processes or expensive equipments. Patterned PDMS layers were created by spin-coating liquid phase PDMS on top of a substrate having sacrificial photoresist patterns, fol
The optical-response properties of nitrogen(N)-doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) films are investigated by means of a combination of ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and first-principles density-functional calculations. The TiO2 films were epitaxially grown on the sapphire substrate by the pulsed laser deposition method. The doping of N atoms was achieved by 70keV of N+ ion implantation, followed by postirradiation heat treatment at 550°C for 2h in air. We find that when 5×1016 (1×1017)Ni
Microalgae have been envisioned as a source of food, feed, health nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Among various microalgae, Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) is known to be the richest feedstock of natural astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a highly effective antioxidation material and is being widely used in aquaculture, nutraceuticals, pharmacology, and feed industries. Here, we present a microfluidic chip consisting of a micropillar array and six sets of culture chambers, which enables sorting o
As the technology node of the dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) continues to decrease below the 10-nm-class, bit-cell failures due to the external environments have increased. As a result, DRAM vendors perform post package inspections to provide fault-free DRAMs to the end customers. However, post package inspections require considerable test costs. To overcome this issue, an in-DRAM built-in self-test (BIST) mechanism is implemented in this study as an alternative solution. Herein, we propose
A chemostat is a bioreactor in which microorganisms can be cultured at steady-state by controlling the rate of culture medium inflow and waste outflow, thus maintaining media composition over time. Even though many microbial studies could greatly benefit from studying microbes in steady-state conditions, high instrument cost, complexity, and large reagent consumption hamper the routine use of chemostats. Microfluidic-based chemostats (i.e. microchemostats) can operate with significantly smaller
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a polymer widely used for fabrication and prototyping of microfluidic chips. The porous matrix structure of PDMS allows small hydrophobic molecules including some fluorescent dyes to be readily absorbed to PDMS and results in high fluorescent background signals, thereby significantly decreasing the optical detection sensitivity. This makes it challenging to accurately detect the fluorescent signals from samples using PDMS devices. Here, we have utilized polytetrafl
We present a novel multi-compartment neuron co-culture microsystem platform for in vitro CNS axon-glia interaction research, capable of conducting up to six independent experiments in parallel for higher-throughput. We developed a new fabrication method to create microfluidic devices having both micro and macro scale structures within the same device through a single soft-lithography process, enabling mass fabrication with good repeatability. The multi-compartment microfluidic co-culture platfor
