About the Lab
Professor Jae Young Choi's research lab focuses on advancing clinical diagnostics and therapeutic strategies for ear and respiratory diseases using cutting-edge technologies such as deep learning and molecular immunology. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of inner ear disorders like Meniere’s disease and cystic fibrosis, with an emphasis on identifying autoimmune mechanisms and biomarkers. It also explores host-microbe interactions in the nasal mucosa, particularly how commensal bacteria modulate antiviral immunity. Additionally, the lab examines the safety and clinical implications of medical imaging in patients with cochlear implants.

Even with protective head bandages, 1.5-T MRI in patients with CIs led to a variety of adverse events, including discomfort or pain and displacement of the internal magnet. Therefore, sedation and careful head positioning may be appropriate for some patients with CIs who undergo MRI, and these patients should be carefully monitored to decrease the likelihood of such adverse effects.

Mutation of SLC26A4 is the most common cause of prelingual hearing loss in East Asia. Patients with SLC26A4 mutations have variable phenotypes ranging from non-syndromic hearing loss to Pendred syndrome. Here, we analyzed the correlation between genotype and various inner ear phenotypes and found a possible underlying mechanism. Auditory rehabilitation in BOR/BO syndrome should be individually tailored keeping in mind the high failure rate after middle ear surgeries. Successful outcome can be expected with cochlear implantations in patients with BOR/BO syndrome who cannot benefit from hearing aids. The novel EYA1 mutations may add to the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of BOR syndrome in the East Asian population.
