About the Lab
Professor Jaebak Kim's research lab specializes in high-energy particle physics, focusing on the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model using data from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The lab emphasizes precision measurements of the Higgs boson, including its invisible decays and off-shell production, as well as searches for new resonances, anomalous gauge couplings, and signatures involving missing transverse momentum, same-sign leptons, and multilepton final states. Advanced machine learning techniques are routinely employed to enhance sensitivity in complex, multi-jet and multi-lepton environments.

A search for new physics is performed using events with two isolated same-sign leptons, two or more jets, and missing transverse momentum. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13[Formula: see text] recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 [Formula: see text]. Multiple search regions are defined by classifying events in terms of missing transverse momentum, the scalar sum of jet transverse mo
A search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson produced via vector boson fusion (VBF) has been performed with $101\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ and collected by the CMS detector in 2017 and 2018. The sensitivity to the VBF production mechanism is enhanced by constructing two analysis categories, one based on missing transverse momentum and a second based on the properties of jets. I
Abstract Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, detailed studies of its properties have been ongoing. Besides its mass, its width—related to its lifetime—is an important parameter. One way to determine this quantity is to measure its off-shell production, where the Higgs boson mass is far away from its nominal value, and relating it to its on-shell production, where the mass is close to the nominal value. Here we report evidence for such off-shell contributions to the production cross-s
Evidence is presented for the electroweak (EW) production of two jets (jj) in association with two Z bosons and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb − 1 . The search is performed in the fully leptonic final state Z Z → ℓ ℓ ℓ ′ ℓ ′ , where ℓ , ℓ ′ = e , μ . The EW production of two jets in associ
An inclusive search for nonresonant signatures of beyond the standard model (SM) phenomena in events with three or more charged leptons, including hadronically decaying $\ensuremath{\tau}$ leptons, is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $138\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016--2018. Abstract The CERN LHC provided proton and heavy ion collisions during its Run 2 operation period from 2015 to 2018. Proton-proton collisions reached a peak instantaneous luminosity of 2.1× 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , twice the initial design value, at √( s )=13 TeV. The CMS experiment records a subset of the collisions for further processing as part of its online selection of data for physics analyses, using a two-level trigger system: the Level-1 trigger, implemented in custom-designed electronics, and
The observation of the production of four top quarks in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018 at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. Events with two same-sign, three, or four charged leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are analyzed. Compared to previous results in these channels, updated identification techniques for charged leptons and jets or

The h and h S bosons are required to decay into a pair of tau leptons and a pair of b quarks, respectively. The search uses a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb −1 . Mass ranges of 240–3000 GeV for m H and 60–2800 GeV for $$ {m
Abstract Many measurements at the LHC require efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom (b) or charm (c) quarks. An overview of the algorithms used to identify c jets is described and a novel method to calibrate them is presented. This new method adjusts the entire distributions of the outputs obtained when the algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. It is based on an iterative approach exploiting three distinct control regions that are enric

The data sets used in this search were collected with a dedicated dimuon trigger stream with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by retaining a reduced amount of information, in order to explore otherwise ina
