About the Lab

Professor Jaeeun Shin's research lab focuses on understanding the global and regional burden of chronic inflammatory and allergic diseases, including asthma, atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and peripheral artery disease, with an emphasis on their epidemiological trends, risk factors, and health impacts. The lab also investigates the immunological mechanisms underlying severe infectious diseases such as COVID-19, particularly the role of cytokine storms and type I interferon responses. Using large-scale population health data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, the lab integrates epidemiological, clinical, and social determinants to inform public health policy and intervention strategies. A key focus is on how environmental and lifestyle factors—such as smoking—interact with genetic susceptibility to drive disease onset and progression.
