About the Lab
Professor Jaewon Oh's research lab focuses on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and risk stratification in acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions. The lab investigates biomarkers such as red cell distribution width (RDW) and novel pharmacotherapies like vericiguat and riociguat to improve clinical outcomes and personalize treatment strategies. Additionally, the lab explores clinical challenges in specific populations, including patients with advanced heart failure, those with comorbid conditions like hepatocellular carcinoma and hypersplenism, and those undergoing fertility treatments, using proteomic and clinical cohort analyses to identify predictive biomarkers and optimize therapeutic decisions.

15A novel relationship was noted between positive RDWΔ(1Mdis-adm) and CV events in ADHF patients. Measurement of RDW at 1 month after ADHF assists in the prediction of adverse CV outcomes. Therefore, repeated measurement of RDW is a simple and inexpensive method that may facilitate assessment of CV risk stratification in patients with ADHF.
To the Editor: With regard to the articles on the Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension Soluble Guanylate Cyclase-Stimulator Trial 1 (CHEST-1) and the Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Soluble Guanylate Cyclase-Stimulator Trial 1 (PATENT-1) by Ghofrani et al. (July 25 issue) 1,2 and the corresponding editorial by Archer, 3 we agree that pharmacotherapy should be available to patients with inoperable disease. However, the observed improvements in exercise capacity with riociguat for chronic
Abstract Aims In 2021, vericiguat was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission (EC) for reducing cardiovascular mortality and heart failure (HF) hospitalizations in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) based on the Vericiguat Global Study in Subjects with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction (VICTORIA) trial. However, there has been no report for characterizing the generalizability of vericiguat to real-world clinical practice.
Among the Korean hospitalized HFrEF patients, 80% met KFDA label criteria, while only 12% met the inclusion criteria of PARADIGM-HF trial for SV if requiring ≥10 mg enalapril. Sub-optimal pharmacotherapy could be the main reason for ineligible SV use based on the PARADIGM-HF criteria.
Poor ovarian response (POR) in controlled ovarian stimulation is often observed during in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer cycles and it is a major problem. A POR has been found to be related to several factors, including advanced age, high body mass index, and history of ovarian or pelvic surgery. However, it is difficult to predict POR, as there are no specific biomarkers known. In this study, we used quantitative proteomic analyses to investigate potential biomarkers that can predict p
Hypersplenism, secondary to portal hypertension, is common in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with liver cirrhosis. Hepatic resection in the patient with hypersplenic thrombocytopenia (HSTC) may cause a perioperative bleeding episode and sometimes, liver failure. In order to investigate the effect of concomitant splenectomy in HCC patients with HSTC, clinical parameters are retrospectively reviewed for 18 HCC patients who underwent hepatic resection with or without splenectomy. Among 581 HCC pati
Results from cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOT) with 5 different sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i; empagliflozin, canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, ertugliflozin, sotagliflozin), initially developed for their glucose-lowering effect by blocking tubular glucose reabsorption in kidney, have been shown to decrease the risk of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) across a range of patients with and without atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitu
Background A recent study reported that morning hypertension is associated with poor cardiovascular outcomes in hypertensive patients. However, it is unclear whether morning hypertension associated with sustained nocturnal hypertension and that associated with morning blood pressure (BP) surge differ in terms of their effects on cardiovascular target organ damage and clinical outcomes. The present study aimed to determine the association of morning hypertension with/without nocturnal hypertensio
