About the Lab

Professor Jang Hye-ran's research lab specializes in ophthalmic clinical and translational research, with a focus on anterior segment diseases, corneal wound healing, and ocular complications following refractive and cataract surgeries. The lab investigates the role of stress proteins such as heat shock proteins in ocular tissue responses to thermal preconditioning and laser treatment, aiming to improve surgical outcomes. Additionally, the lab explores genetic associations—particularly HLA-B51—in inflammatory ocular disorders like Behçet’s disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis, contributing to diagnostic and pathogenic insights. The lab also addresses clinical challenges in ocular surface disease, including contamination risks in preserved and preservative-free artificial tears and rare lacrimal system pathologies such as lacrimal sac diverticulum.

Microbial contamination of multiply used preservative-free artificial tears packed in reclosable containers
M S Kim, Chul Young Choi, J M Kim, H R Chung, H Y Woo
SJR Q1British Journal of Ophthalmology

Preservative-free artificial tears in reclosable containers are at risk of contamination in a daily and multiple use setting, especially in patients with a poor administering technique, which is associated with fingertip touch and advanced age.

Ischaemic change after intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin®) injection for macular oedema secondary to non‐ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion
Kwan Soo Kim, Hae Ran Chang, Su-Jeong Song
SJR Q1Acta OphthalmologicaOA

Editor, A 65-year-old male patient with a 12-year history of diabetes presented with decreased visual acuity in his right eye of 3 months duration. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.4 in the right eye (RE) and 1.0 in the left eye (LE). A slit-lamp examination showed grade two bilateral nucleosclerosis with no further abnormalities of the anterior segment. Fundus examination and fluorescein angiography showed flame-shaped retinal haemorrhages in four quadrants and optocillary shunt vessel

The Effect of Cataract Surgery on Diurnal Intraocular Pressure Fluctuation
Kwan Soo Kim, Joon Mo Kim, Ki Ho Park, Chul Young Choi, Hae Ran Chang
SJR Q1Journal of Glaucoma

We found a significant decrease in IOP after cataract surgery in nonglaucoma patients. However, change of diurnal IOP fluctuation after surgery was not statistically different. These results can be used as baseline data for diurnal IOP fluctuation studies in glaucoma patients after cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This case-control study was undertaken to evaluate the association of HLA-B51 antigen and its allelic types with Behçet's disease (BD) and with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), to investigate the degree of this association with diagnostic types and clinical variables of BD. METHODS: The DNA typing of HLA-B51 by nested PCR-SSP was performed in 61 patients with BD, 56 patients with RAS, and in 70 healthy controls. Also, blind quality control study was done to assess the accuracy of

Effect of Thermal Preconditioning Before Excimer Laser Photoablation
Joon Mo Kim, Jae Chan Kim, Woo Chan Park, Jeong‐Sun Seo, Hae Ran Chang
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The purposes of this study were to assess the expression patterns of heat shock proteins (Hsps), after eyeball heating or cooling, and to elucidate their relationships with corneal wound healing and intraocular complications after excimer laser treatment. Experimental mice were grouped into three according to local pretreatment type: heating, cooling, and control groups. The preconditioning was to apply saline eyedrops onto the cornea prior to photoablation. Following photoablation, we evaluated

Multilobular Lacrimal Sac Diverticulum Presenting as a Lower Eyelid Mass
Jung Hoon Kim, Hae Ran Chang, Kyung In Woo
SJR Q2Korean Journal of OphthalmologyOA

Lacrimal sac diverticulum is a rare condition, and its various symptoms complicate differential diagnosis. We present cases of a peculiar type of lacrimal diverticulum. A 5-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman presented with a protruding mass inferior to the medial canthus. Each lacrimal system was patent to irrigation. The masses compressed and distorted the lacrimal passage and had no apparent connection with the lacrimal sac in dacryocystography or computed tomography. Surgical exploration a

Intravitreal itraconazole inhibits laser-induced choroidal neovascularization in rats
Jeong Hun Bae, Ah Reum Hwang, Chan Yun Kim, Hyeong Gon Yu, Hyoung Jun Koh, Woo Ick Yang, Hae Ran Chang, Sung Chul Lee
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a major cause of severe visual loss in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Recently, itraconazole has shown potent and dose-dependent inhibition of tumor-associated angiogenesis. We evaluated the anti-angiogenic effect of itraconazole in a rat model of laser-induced CNV. After laser photocoagulation in each eye to cause CNV, right eyes were administered intravitreal injections of itraconazole; left eyes received balanced salt solution (BSS)

Surgical outcomes of deep sclerectomy with collagen implant
Chan Yun Kim, Hae Ran Chang, Ji Hoon Lee, Samin Hong
SJR Q2Korean Journal of Ophthalmology

We evaulated the effectiveness and adverse effects of deep sclerectomy with collagen implant (DSCI), which is a kind of nonpenetrating filtering surgery. In this retrospective study, DSCI was performed in 15 eyes of 11 glaucoma patients. An trabeculo-Descemet's membrane (TDM) window is created by a deep sclerokeratectomy, and the collagen implant is placed in the sclera bed under a superficial flap (deep sclerectomy with collagen implant). In 3 of 15 eyes the DSCI was intraoperatively converted

The Frequency and Aspects of Ptosis in Korean Old Age
Chan Yi Park, Seong Lyong Jeon, Kyung In Woo, Hae Ran Chang
SJR Q4Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society

Purpose: To study the frequency and aspects of ptosis in Koreans aged 50 years or older. Methods: In this study, 377 elderly people visiting retirement center were included. Margin-reflex distance 1 (MRD1) and palpebral fissure (PF) were evaluated with an attempt to eliminate eyebrow elevation. Levator function (LF) was measured with Berke's method. If the measured MRD1 was less than 2 mm, ptosis was diagnosed and its frequency, relation to sex, age, levator function and superior deep sulcus wer
