About the Lab

Professor Jee-Soo Lee's research lab focuses on advancing biomedical technologies for disease diagnosis, prognosis, and management, with a strong emphasis on liquid biopsy applications in oncology and infectious diseases. The lab investigates circulating biomarkers—such as circulating tumor DNA and proteins—using cutting-edge molecular and proteomic technologies to enable early detection, real-time monitoring, and personalized treatment strategies. Research also extends to understanding disease dynamics in conditions like pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and COVID-19, leveraging genomics and proteomics to identify prognostic markers. Additionally, the lab contributes to the development of next-generation materials for energy storage, particularly in gel polymer electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries.

SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) based on semi-interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure for lithium-ion batteries were prepared by mixing boron-containing cross-linker (BC) composed of ethylene oxide (EO) chains, cross-linkable methacrylate group, and anion-trapping boron moiety with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) followed by ultraviolet light-induced curing process. Various physical and electrochemical properties of the GPEs were systematically investigated by varying the EO chain leng

Liquid biopsy in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: current status of circulating tumor cells and circulating tumor DNA
Jee‐Soo Lee, Sung Sup Park, Young Kyung Lee, Jeffrey A. Norton, Stefanie S. Jeffrey
SJR Q1Molecular OncologyOA

Reliable biomarkers are required to evaluate and manage pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Circulating tumor cells and circulating tumor DNA are shed into blood and can be relatively easily obtained from minimally invasive liquid biopsies for serial assays and characterization, thereby providing a unique potential for early diagnosis, forecasting disease prognosis, and monitoring of therapeutic response. In this review, we provide an overview of current technologies used to detect circulating tum

BACKGROUND: Positive results from real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) in recovered patients raise concern that patients who recover from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be at risk of reinfection. Currently, however, evidence that supports reinfection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has not been reported. METHODS: We conducted whole-genome sequencing of the viral RNA from clinical specimens at the initial infection and at t

In managing patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), early identification of those at high risk and real-time monitoring of disease progression to severe COVID-19 is a major challenge. We aimed to identify potential early prognostic protein markers and to expand understanding of proteome dynamics during clinical progression of the disease. We performed in-depth proteome profiling on 137 sera, longitudinally collected from 25 patients with COVID-19 (non-severe patients, n = 13; patients

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has emerged as a promising tool for various clinical applications, including early diagnosis, therapeutic target identification, treatment response monitoring, prognosis evaluation, and minimal residual disease detection. Consequently, ctDNA assays have been incorporated into clinical practice. In this review, we offer an in-depth exploration of the clinical implementation of ctDNA assays. Notably, we examined existing evidence related to pre-analytical procedures,

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Thalassemia is the most common form of hereditary anemia. Here, we aimed to investigate the 13-year trend of the epidemiologic profiles and risk of comorbidities in thalassemia using a nationwide population-based registry in Korea. Diagnosis of thalassemia, the comorbidities and transfusion events in patients with thalassemia were identified in the Korean National Health Insurance database, which includes the entire population. The prevalence of thalassemia increased from 0.74/100,000 in 2006 to

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern have been emerging. However, knowledge of temporal and spatial dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 is limited. This study characterized SARS-CoV-2 evolution in immunosuppressed patients with long-term SARS-CoV-2 shedding for 73-250 days, without specific treatment. We conducted whole-genome sequencing of 27 serial samples, including 26 serial samples collected from various anatomic sites of two patients and the first positive sa

SJR Q2Polymer International

Abstract The effects of compatibilizer and fillers on the mechanical properties and dispersion state of droplets of polypropylene (PP)/polylactide (PLA) blends were investigated. Two blended composite systems, i.e. PP‐rich (80/20) containing microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) modified with silane (m‐MCC) and PLA‐rich (20/80) containing MCC were prepared by melt compounding using a twin‐screw extruder. The structural differences between MCC and m‐MCC were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared

Different Cosmetic Habits Can Affect the Biophysical Profile of Facial Skin: A Study of Korean and Chinese Women
Ji Su Lee, Jaehyoun Ha, Kyeho Shin, Hyojung Kim, Soyun Cho
SJR Q3Annals of DermatologyOA

Women in Suwon (Korea) were found to have a better profile of biophysical parameters than women in the 3 Chinese cities, which might be attributed to cosmetic habits, besides age and climatic factors. The fact that appropriate cosmetic habits are associated with favorable skin biophysical parameters underscores the importance of daily skin care routine in preserving skin functions.

The Ubiquitin Code in Disease Pathogenesis and Progression: Composition, Characteristics and its Potential as a Therapeutic Target
Ji Su Lee, Hye Yeon Kim, Yong Tae Kwon, Chang Hoon Ji, Su Jin Lee, Su Kim
Discovery MedicineOA

Conjugation of substrate proteins with ubiquitin (Ub), a 76 amino acid protein, was discovered as the first major translational modification responsible for protein degradation. Ubiquitination occurs as a cascade among ubiquitin-activating enzyme (E1), ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2), and ubiquitin ligases (E3) enzymes that transfer and covalently conjugate Ub to the lysine (Lys) residue and α-amino group in methionine (Met) residues of substrates. Following the initial conjugation, Ub itself
