About the Lab

Professor Jeong Hyun Lee's research lab focuses on clinical and epidemiological studies in internal medicine, with a strong emphasis on metabolic and inflammatory diseases, mental health disorders, and healthcare-associated infections. The lab investigates long-term tracking of blood lipid profiles in Asian populations, the pathogenesis and diagnosis of rare inflammatory conditions like Kimura disease and IgG4-related disease, and the psychometric validation of eating disorder assessments in Korean populations. Additionally, the lab explores biomarkers and risk factors for systemic inflammation and mortality, particularly in rural and vulnerable populations such as preterm infants and elderly Koreans.

Catheter-related bloodstream infections in neonatal intensive care units
Jung Hyun Lee
Korean Journal of PediatricsOA

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are regularly used in intensive care units, and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) remains a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, particularly in preterm infants. Increased survival rate of extremely-low-birth-weight infants can be partly attributed to routine practice of CVC placement. The most common types of CVCs used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) include umbilical venous catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, a

The 23-year tracking of blood lipids from adolescence to adulthood in Korea: the Kangwha study
Jung Hyun Lee, Hyeon Chang Kim, Dae Ryong Kang, Il Suh
SJR Q1Lipids in Health and DiseaseOA

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined tracking pattern of blood lipids level during long follow-up periods in Western countries. However, there have been few such studies in Asian populations. METHODS: The Kangwha Study is a community-based prospective cohort study that started in 1986 on Kangwha Island, South Korea. A total of 432 participants (47% men) were enrolled in the study, during which serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were

Orbital Mass With Features of Both Kimura Disease and Immunoglobulin G4-Related Disease
Jung Hyun Lee, Jeong Hee Kim, Sang Un Lee, Sung Chul Kim
SJR Q2Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Kimura disease has been known as a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, since the first report in 1937 and characterized by an increased eosinophil fraction in peripheral blood, increased serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, and lymphoid granuloma with eosinophilic infiltration on histopathological examination. The authors present a 30-year-old man who visited their clinic with a 3-month history of protrusion and conjunctival injection of the right eye. Surgical mass resection was p

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) in Korean patients with eating disorders and healthy controls, and to investigate cultural differences of EDI-2 between a Korean group and a North American standardization sample. Materials and Methods: The Korean version of the EDI-2 was prepared after comprehensive clinical assessment of Korean patients with eating disorders (n=327) as well as f

Biochip technology for monitoring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
이정현, 정효일

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety-related disorder that occurs after an exposure to an emotionally traumatic event, such as a lifethreatening experience, and that persists with intrusive and distressing emotion-laden memories. It can trigger further mental health problems, such as depression, bipolar disorder, mania and so on. As a large population suffers from these complex diseases, its treatment results in massive secondary costs to society. Recent diagnosis and treatment of

Inter-Rater Reliability of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Measurements in a Multicenter Cohort Study
Jung Hyun Lee, Dong Phil Choi, Jee‐Seon Shim, Dae Jung Kim, Sungha Park, Hyeon Chang Kim
Journal of Health Informatics and StatisticsOA

Objectives: Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the presence of carotid artery plaque are widely used as preclinical markers of atherosclerosis. Due to operator dependency in measuring CIMT, it is important to evaluate the reliability of measuring CIMT and plaque between centers in a multicenter study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of CIMT and plaque presence among three clinical centers of the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Etiology Research Ce

SJR Q2Journal of Applied Polymer Science

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of N ‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) and methacrylic acid (MA) comonomers on the curing characteristics and properties of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel for soft contact lenses. A real‐time temperature measurement system was devised and the exothermic behaviors of hydrogel contact lenses comprising PHEMA, P(HEMA/NVP), and P(HEMA/MA) during oven‐curing condition were analyzed. The results of the real‐time temperature measurement were com

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the association between physical activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in middle-aged and elderly individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. METHODS: This study used data from the 2016-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). We included only those over 40 years of age diagnosed with one or more of the following: osteoarthritis, rheumatism, and osteoporosis. In total, 4,731 participants (783 men and 3,948 women) w

SJR Q1Circulation

Introduction: Obesity has been an important issue for global health. The use of the smartphone application might contribute to weight loss. However, there is still little evidence for the effectiveness among people without overt metabolic disorder. Hypothesis: We assessed the weight loss for people who used the smartphone application with and without personal coaching, with respect to people who did not use any. Methods: A total of 129 participants (aged 30-59 years; 63 men; 66 women) were recru

A Comparison of Contract Requirements for Design Professional Liability Insurance in Design-build Highway Projects
Jung Hyun Lee, Baabak Ashuri
EPiC series in built environmentOA

In the transportation design-build (DB) industry, the responsibility of the design is transferred to the design-build team from the owner. One of the critical issues for state departments of transportation (DOTs) is design professional liability. To cover designers’ professional negligence, design professional liability insurance (DPLI) should ensure satisfactory coverages in DB projects for state DOTs. The objective of this study is to identify the variability of the DPLI policy requirements th
