About the Lab
Professor Jeong Yoon Park's research lab focuses on spinal disorders, particularly degenerative spinal conditions such as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), spondylolisthesis, and disc degeneration. The lab investigates the genetic, biomechanical, and molecular mechanisms underlying spinal degeneration, with an emphasis on pelvic parameters, adjacent-segment disease, and gene expression profiles in intervertebral discs. Additionally, the lab explores genetic polymorphisms related to disease susceptibility, particularly in relation to DNA repair pathways and cancer risk. The integration of clinical spine surgery with molecular and genetic research defines the lab’s translational approach.

15Patients having cervical surgery for OPLL should also undergo simultaneous studies of the thoracic spine looking for tandem OPLL and/or OLF. The frequency of tandem lesions in this series was 23 of 68, with 6 requiring subsequent surgery for an evolving thoracic myelopathic deficit.

If caudal and cranial ASD are considered, the overall occurrence rate of ASD increases to 50%. The incidence rate of caudal ASD at L5-S1 was significantly lower than that of cranial ASD. Minimally invasive surgery with a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF) is an important minimally invasive fusion technique for the lumbar spine. Lumbar spine reoperation is challenging and is thought to have greater complication risks. The purpose of this study was to compare MIS TLIF with unilateral screw fixation perioperative results between primary and revision surgeries.
