About the Lab
Professor Jeong-A Kim's research lab specializes in phonetics, phonology, and second language acquisition, with a strong focus on cross-linguistic contrasts between Korean and English. The lab investigates speech production and perception, particularly in L2 learners, examining acoustic and articulatory differences in consonants and vowels. Key research directions include vowel and fricative pronunciation by Korean learners of English, voice onset time (VOT) in stop consonants, and the impact of L1 transfer on L2 pronunciation. The lab also explores developmental aspects of language in young children, such as responses to illustrated picture books, and contributes to theoretical phonology through analyses of Korean morphophonological phenomena like reduplication.

While English has a variety of fricative sounds such as /s/, /z/, /∫/, /ʒ/, /f/, /v/, /Θ/, /ð/, Korean has only two kinds of fricatives, /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/. Based on the prediction that Korean learners of English will have difficulty in pronouncing English fricative sounds, this paper tries to investigate and compare the phonetic and acoustic characteristics of English fricative sounds produced by English native speakers and Korean learners. The rise time, the duration of frication and the duration of
Assuming that linguistic knowledge consists of several tiers or modules, we can easily find that the most vulnerable parts when learning a second language are phonetic and phonological components. Based on different phonemic inventories between Korean and English, and the common belief that language transfer occurs most frequently in speakers' phonology, this paper compares the Korean speakers' English pronunciation of oral stops with English native speakers' and examines whether language transf
Kim, Jeongah. 2004. A Reanalysis of Korean Partial Reduplication. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-3, 281-305. Based on the several problems of the previous analyses by McCarthy & Prince (1986), Jun (1994) and Davis & Lee (1994, 1996), this paper proposes an alternative analysis of Korean partial reduplication. Korean partial reduplication is divided into two types, prefixation and suffixation, according to the structures of the stems. If the stem includes a heavy syllable, reduplication is app
The purpose of this study is to find out how two different techniques of illustrations(real vs animation) of picture book affect the preschoolers responses. To see the preschoolers response differences, 4 picture book with two different illustration techniques were given to the 40 five-year-old preschoolers. Transcripts of preschoolers responses were analyzed by two categories of response (linguistic vs behavioral response). Preschoolers response about illustration was analyzed three categories
This paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of Korean vowel production by 12 Korean native speakers and 36 adult learners. The analyses have been performed with investigations of F1 and F2 values. Results showed that there's no significant difference between /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ and between /ㅗ/and /ㅜ/ in Korean native speakers' pronunciations. The distinguishing tendencies found in the analyses of foreign learners' pronunciations are fronting and lowering of /ㅗ/ by English speakers, backing and he
The paper explores the phonetic motivations of onset-coda asymmetry in voicing assimilation and neutralization, and attempts to offer a functionalist analysis assuming that speech and perception conform to the principle of economy. The asymmetry between onset and coda, related to the voicing assimilation and neutralization, is attributable to the differences in numbers and weights of perceptual cues. The phonetic interpretation of onset-coda asymmetry provides a ground for re-analyzing the const
Even though many advantages of B2B e-marketplaces have been known, there are not many successful cases of utilizing e-marketplaces. Considering this fact, it is necessary to deliver a study to suggest an appropriate strategy based on the corporate characteristics in order to enhance the performance of B2B e-marketplace. This study is designed to, focused on increasing the competitiveness of the small businesses, identify successful factors affecting the performance of B2B e-marketplace. An empir
