About the Lab

Professor Jeongha Kim's research lab focuses on marine natural products and ecological restoration, with a strong emphasis on brown algae such as Ecklonia cava and Ulva species. The lab investigates bioactive compounds from marine macroalgae, particularly phlorotannins, and their potential applications in antiviral therapeutics, including inhibition of HIV-1 enzymes. In parallel, the lab explores ecological dynamics, including kelp forest restoration, green tide blooms, and algal responses to environmental stressors and herbivory, integrating physiological, biochemical, and ecological approaches across seasonal and spatial scales. The bioassay-directed isolation of a marine brown alga, Ecklonia cava, afforded four phlorotannin derivatives, eckol (1), 8,8'-bieckol (2), 8,4"'-dieckol (3), and phlorofucofuroeckol A (4). Among these compounds, 2 and 3 exhibited an inhibitory effect on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease.
