About the Lab
Professor Jeong-Seung Kwon's research lab specializes in oral medicine and orofacial pain, with a primary focus on the interplay between systemic conditions, salivary dysfunction, and orofacial disorders. The lab investigates the clinical implications of xerostomia (dry mouth), including its impact on oral health, candidiasis, and quality of life, while exploring therapeutic interventions such as pilocarpine mouthwash. A significant research direction involves understanding the role of chronic orofacial pain, particularly in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and fibromyalgia, in relation to sleep disturbances and autoimmune markers. The lab also examines microbial dynamics in the oral cavity, especially the dimorphic behavior of *Candida* species in non-pseudomembranous oral candidiasis.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 0.1% pilocarpine mouthwash in xerostomic patients. Sixty volunteers were randomly allocated to two groups. The experimental group used 0.1% pilocarpine solution, and the control group used 0.9% saline. The short- and long-term effects of pilocarpine were investigated by measuring the severity of oral dryness, minor salivary flow rates and unstimulated whole salivary flow rate at predetermined times. The severity of oral dryness was decrea
Dimorphic Candida exist as commensal yeast carriages or infiltrate hyphae in the oral cavity. Here, we investigated the clinical relevance of Candida hyphae in non-pseudomembranous oral candidiasis (OC) by smears of tongue biofilms. We conducted a retrospective study of 2829 patients who had had tongue smears regardless of OC suspicion. Clinical characteristics were evaluated using a novel method of assessing hyphae. Clinical factors (moderate/severe stimulated pain, pain aggravated by stimulati
Thyroid autoimmunity should be considered in fibromyalgia patients. The percentage of women in menopause was higher in thyroid autoantibody positive fibromyalgia patients.
Methotrexate (MTX) is a chemotherapeutic agent that is used to treat a host of malignancies. But recently, MTX has also been used as a therapeutic agent for chronic inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. However, MTX is an antimetabolite that affects rapidly dividing normal cells such as oral mucosal epithelial cells, gastrointestinal epithelial cells, and bone marrow cells-which explains why oral mucositis is often an initial manifestat
Compliance with a mandibular advancement device is important for the optimal treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Recent advances in information and communication technology-based monitoring and intervention for chronic diseases have enabled continuous monitoring and personalized management. Self-evaluation and self-regulation through objective monitoring and feedback may improve compliance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of information and communication technology-based remo
Xerostomia is subjective feeling of dry mouth, a symptom that may or may not be accompanied by hyposalivation, an objective decrease in salivary flow. There are many causes induced xerostomia like drugs, salivary gland diseases, radiation therapy to the head and neck region, Sjogren syndrome, emotional stress etc. Insufficient salivary flow creates complications with oral candidiasis, dental caries, periodontitis, halitosis, dysgeusia. So finally, these complications lead to an overall decline i
This study was designed to establish safe guidelines for pediatric dental practice regarding temporomandibular joint (TMJ) range of motion (ROM) and mouth area (MA). A total of 438 children aged 3–15 years old of homogenous ethnicity participated in the study; the distribution of participants was approximately equal (sex; n = 15; age, n = 30). Maximum mouth opening (MMO), body height, weight, and age of each participant were recorded, and the TMJ ROM including anterior and lateral movements, MA,
BACKGROUND: This study analyzed the association between autoantibody types and salivary gland hypofunction in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients who visited the Department of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine at Yonsei University Dental Hospital from January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2021, and who were diagnosed with pSS. Out of 191 patients who fulfilled the 2016 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism
