About the Lab
Professor Jeong-Yeol Park's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary tract cancers, with a particular emphasis on early carcinogenesis, tumor microenvironment, and prognostic biomarkers. The lab investigates key transcription factors like Oct4 and Nanog in pancreatic cancer, explores the role of signaling molecules such as VEGF-C and claudin 7 in cancer progression and metastasis, and examines the impact of bile acids in biliary tract carcinogenesis. Their work integrates clinical pathology with molecular biology to identify novel diagnostic and prognostic markers in rare and aggressive cancers.

15The strong expression of Oct4 and Nanog in metaplastic ducts and Oct4 expression preceding Ras mutation suggests that these homeobox transcription factors are associated with the early stage of pancreatic cancer carcinogenesis and may play an important role in that process.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The management of gallbladder polyps (GBP) is directly linked to the early diagnosis of gallbladder cancer (GBC). This study aimed to evaluate the malignant risk of GBP. METHODS: In total, 1558 patients diagnosed with GBP were followed. Neoplastic polyps were defined as GBC and its premalignant lesions. The risk for malignancy was estimated with the cumulative detection rate of neoplastic polyps. RESULTS: Thirty-three cases (2.1%) were diagnosed with neoplastic polyps. The cu
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Primary hepatic neuroendocrine carcinomas (PHNECs) are extremely rare, with only about 150 cases having been reported in the English-language literature. Because of the rarity of PHNECs, its clinical features and treatment outcomes are not well understood. Here, we report our experiences with PHNECs. METHODS: We identified patients diagnosed with PHNEC and analyzed their demographics, baseline laboratory data, tumor characteristics, treatment modalities and outcomes. RESULTS:
Our data suggest that VEGF-C expression serves as an independent and important prognostic factor in ICC patients, and it may play an important role in the lymph node metastasis of ICC.
The etiology of biliary tract cancer is obscure, but there are evidences that bile acid plays a role in carcinogenesis. To find the association between biliary tract cancer and bile acid, this study compared the bile acid concentration and composition among patients with biliary cancer, biliary tract stones, and no biliary disease. Bile was compared among patients with biliary tract cancer (n = 26), biliary tract stones (n = 29), and disease free controls (n = 9). Samples were obtained by percut
The disruption of tight junction protein expression in cancer might account for invasiveness, loss of cohesion, and lack of differentiation. Our cDNA array data indicated that claudin 7 was up-regulated in gastric carcinoma. We investigated the expression patterns and clinical implications of claudin 7 in gastric cancer. By immunohistochemical staining and Western blot, claudin 7 was significantly more often expressed in intestinal metaplasia, adenoma and cancer than in normal gastric epithelium
Most lesions with low or indeterminate risk did not changed in size during follow-up period, but one fifth of high-risk lesions were identified as borderline or malignant after surgery. Surgical resection should be performed in patients with high-risk cysts considering their clinical condition, and radiological follow-up of nonsurgically managed cysts should be continued for more than 6 years.
The goal of this study was to determine whether MUC1 antibody conjugated with a fluorophore could be used to visualize pancreatic cancer. Anti-MUC1 (CT2) antibody was conjugated with 550 nm or 650 nm fluorophores. Nude mouse were used to make subcutaneous and orthotopic models of pancreatic cancer. Western blot and flow cytometric analysis confirmed the expression of MUC1 in human pancreatic cancer cell lines including BxPC-3 and Panc-1. Immunocytochemistry with fluorophore conjugated anti-MUC1
