About the Lab
Professor Ji-hoon Bae's research lab specializes in orthopedic biomechanics and musculoskeletal tissue engineering, focusing on joint stability, ligament and meniscal injuries, and surgical fixation techniques. The lab investigates the biomechanical performance of orthopedic implants and grafts, particularly in the context of proximal humerus and tibial fractures, as well as the clinical relevance of diagnostic signs like painful popping in posterior root tears of the medial meniscus. Their work bridges clinical orthopedics with experimental cadaveric and biomechanical testing to improve surgical outcomes and non-operative management strategies.

15We evaluated the biomechanical properties of two different methods of fixation for unstable fractures of the proximal humerus. Biomechanical testing of the two groups, locking plate alone (LP), and locking plate with a fibular strut graft (LPSG), was performed using seven pairs of human cadaveric humeri. Cyclical loads between 10 N and 80 N at 5 Hz were applied for 1,000,000 cycles. Immediately after cycling, an increasing axial load was applied at a rate of displacement of 5 mm/min. The displac
BACKGROUND: High tibial osteotomy can affect the posterior tibial slope in the sagittal plane because of the triangular configuration of the proximal tibia. However, the effect of the location of cortical hinge on posterior tibial slope has not been previously described. HYPOTHESIS: Posterolateral location of the cortical hinge will increase posterior tibial slope after medial open wedge osteotomy, and lateral location of the cortical hinge will not affect the change of the posterior tibial slop
PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the reliability of the dial test by assessing the correlation between the severity of posterolateral corner injuries and the amount of external rotation of the tibia. METHODS: Fourteen paired cadaveric legs were fixed into a custom-made isotonic rotation machine with the knee flexed at 30 degrees . For group I (7 right knees), the lateral collateral ligament, popliteofibular ligament, popliteus tendon, and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) were c
We reviewed thirty patients with degenerative posterior root tear of the medial meniscus to investigate clinical results of non-operative treatment retrospectively. There were 3 men and 27 women at a median age of 59 years old (range, 51-65). The median follow-up period was 36 months (range, 24-51). Non-operative treatments included non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs daily for 8-12 weeks and supervised physical therapy twice a week at least during a period of 8 weeks. The symptoms, physical s
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of a single event of painful popping in the presence of a posterior root tear of the medial meniscus in middle-aged to older Asian patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records of 936 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgeries for an isolated medial meniscus tear between January 2000 and December 2010. There were 332 men and 604 women with a mean age of
The food-borne pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is distinguished from other food-borne pathogens by its ability to grow at water activity values below 0.90. Previous studies have indicated that proline accumulation mediated by transport represents a primary osmoregulatory strategy utilized by this bacterium (C. B. Anderson and L. D. Witter, Appl. Environ, Microbiol. 43:1501-1503, 1982; I. Koujima, H. Hayashi, K. Tomochika, A. Okabe, and Y. Kanemasa, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 35:467-470, 1978; K. J
PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of bilateral discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) and to evaluate the arthroscopic features of lateral meniscus in asymptomatic contralateral knees in an Asian population who presented with symptomatic DLMs. METHODS: This study prospectively enrolled 52 consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic procedures for symptomatic DLMs (31 complete and 21 incomplete) and who consented to the examination of the contralateral knee at the time of arthroscopy. Types of DL
The choice of an appropriate carrier and its microarchitectural design is integral in directing bone ingrowth into the defect site and determining its subsequent rate of bone formation and remodeling. We have selected a three-dimensional polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold with an interconnected honeycomb-like porous structure to provide a conduit for vasculature ingrowth as well as an osteoconductive pathway to guide recruited cells responding to a unique triphasic release of osteoinductive bone mo
There are limited reports on the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on meniscus healing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of leukocyte-rich PRP (L-PRP) on potential healing of the horizontal medial meniscus tears in a rabbit model. A horizontal medial meniscus tear was created in both knees of nine skeletally mature adult rabbits. Left or right knees were randomly assigned to a L-PRP group, or a control group. 0.5 mL of L-PRP from 10 mL of each rabbit's whole blood was p
