About the Lab

Professor Ji-Hye Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research targeting major human diseases, with a strong emphasis on cancer, endometriosis, and neurodegenerative disorders. The lab investigates the therapeutic potential of natural compounds and nutraceuticals—such as melatonin, costunolide, Pueraria flower extract, and curcumin derivatives—in modulating cellular pathways related to apoptosis, inflammation, lipid metabolism, and neuroprotection. Using in vitro and in vivo disease models, including ovarian cancer, endometriosis, and Alzheimer’s disease, the lab aims to develop safe, effective, and naturally derived therapeutics with improved bioavailability and reduced side effects. Their work also includes evaluating imaging biomarkers, such as interim PET/CT, for clinical risk stratification in lymphoma patients.

Melatonin synergistically enhances cisplatin‐induced apoptosis via the dephosphorylation of ERK/p90 ribosomal S6 kinase/heat shock protein 27 in SK‐OV‐3 cells

SJR Q1Journal of Pineal Research

To evaluate melatonin's ability to enhance ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin treatment for ovarian cancer, this study was performed. Melatonin by itself had no significant cytotoxicity against SK-OV-3 cells, while cisplatin suppressed the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Combined treatment with cisplatin and melatonin synergistically inhibited the viability of SK-OV-3 cells with the synergism between two drugs (1 > combination index). In contrast, melatonin revealed the protective effe

SJR Q1Phytotherapy Research

Hyperlipidemia is an important factor to induce metabolic syndrome such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Recently, some antihyperlipidemic agents from herbal medicines have been in the spotlight in the medical science field. Thus, the present study evaluated the antihyperlipidemic activities of the essential oil from the leaves of Pinus koraiensis SIEB (EOPK) that has been used as a folk remedy for heart disease. The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revea

Costunolide Induces Apoptosis in Human Endometriotic Cells through Inhibition of the Prosurvival Akt and Nuclear Factor Kappa B Signaling Pathway

SJR Q2Biological and Pharmaceutical BulletinOA

Endometriosis, a disease affecting 5-15% of women of reproductive age, is characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial tissue. Costunolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, has anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities that may be efficacious in therapy for endometriosis. In the present study, we investigated the effect of costunolide on the cell growth and apoptosis of endometriotic cells. We found that costunolide significantly inhibited the cell viability of 11Z and 12Z human endometrioti

As the elderly population is increasing, Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become a global issue and many clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate treatments for AD. As these clinical trials have been conducted and have failed, the development of new theraphies for AD with fewer adverse effects remains a challenge. In this study, we examined the effects of Theracurmin on cognitive decline using 5XFAD mice, an AD mouse model. Theracurmin is more bioavailable form of curcumin, generated with sub

SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Pueraria flowers have been used as a vegetable and an ingredient for tea and jelly. In this study, we investigated the effects of Pueraria flower extract (PFE) on endometriosis, a common gynaecological disease characterised by local sterile inflammation of peritoneal cavity. PFE suppressed the adhesion of human endometriotic cells 11Z and 12Z to human mesothelial Met5A cells. In addition, PFE significantly inhibited the migration of 11Z and 12Z cells as shown by woundhealing and transwell migrat

SJR Q2Leukemia & lymphoma/Leukemia and lymphoma

We evaluated the usefulness of interim 18F-FDG PET/CT for risk stratification using different cutoff values of the Deauville 5-point scale (5-DS) in DLBCL patients treated with rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP). One hundred and fifty patients underwent interim (I-) and end of treatment (EOT-) PET/CT scans. Applying the conventional 5-DS cutoff value of scores 4 to 5 at interim, there was no significant difference in progression free sur

SJR Q1Journal of Periodontal & Implant ScienceOA

PURPOSE: One of the most frequent complications related to dental implants is peri-implantitis, and the characteristics of implant surfaces are closely related to the progression and resolution of inflammation. Therefore, a technical modality that can effectively detoxify the implant surface without modification to the surface is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium-doped: yttrium, aluminium and garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation on the microstructural changes in

Decursin Exerts Anti‐cancer Activity in MDA‐MB‐231 Breast Cancer Cells Via Inhibition of the Pin1 Activity and Enhancement of the Pin1/p53 Association
Ji‐Hyun Kim, Ji Hoon Jung, Sung‐Hoon Kim, Soo‐Jin Jeong
SJR Q1Phytotherapy Research

The peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase Pin1 is overexpressed in a wide variety of cancer cells and thus considered as an important target molecule for cancer therapy. This study demonstrates that decursin, a bioactive compound from Angelica gigas, exert the anti-cancer effect against breast cancer cells via regulation of Pin1 and its related signaling molecules. We observed that decursin induced G1 arrest with decrease in cyclin D1 level in Pin1-expressing breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231, but no
