About the Lab
Professor Ji Hyeung Kim's research lab specializes in orthopedic surgery and trauma surgery, with a primary focus on complex fracture management in elderly patients, particularly distal femur fractures associated with osteoporosis. The lab investigates innovative fixation techniques such as retrograde intramedullary nailing with cement augmentation and shape memory alloys, as well as biological reconstruction strategies like non-vascularized iliac crest bone grafting for scaphoid nonunions and avascular necrosis. Additional research explores peripheral nerve repair and regeneration, including nerve graft polarity and functional outcomes in animal models. The lab also examines psychosocial aspects of pediatric congenital limb differences, assessing parental stress and its impact on surgical decision-making.

15BACKGROUND: The incidence of distal femur fracture in the elderly has been increasing recently, and commonly occurs with osteoporosis. Retrograde intramedullary nailing has been considered a good surgical option for distal femur fracture. The purpose of the present study was to present our surgical results with retrograde intramedullary nailing for distal femur fractures with osteoporosis. METHODS: Thirteen patients diagnosed with extra-articular distal femur fracture and osteoporosis and manage
We present the surgical outcomes of non-vascularized bone grafting taken from the iliac crest in 24 patients with scaphoid nonunion and avascular necrosis. The Fisk-Fernandez technique was used in 11 patients, and cancellous bone grafting was used in 13 patients. Bony union was achieved in 22 of the 24 patients. Non-vascularized iliac bone grafting can be used for the surgical management of scaphoid nonunion with avascular necrosis. Although revascularization of the proximal fragment after surge

PURPOSE: Although many surgeons have anecdotally described reversing the polarity of the autograft with the intent of improving regeneration, the optimal orientation of the autogenous nerve graft remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare (1) the outcomes of orthodromic and antidromic nerve grafts to clarify the effect of nerve graft polarity and (2) the outcome of either form of nerve grafts with that of nerve repair. METHODS: In 14 of the 26 rabbits used in this study, a 1 cm
Patients with acute calcific periarthritis of the hand exhibited residual pain and calcification for a relatively prolonged period. Those who continued conservative treatment, including NSAIDs, showed pain relief and reduced calcification for up to 6 months. These results suggest that conservative treatment could be tried for at least 6 months before considering the surgical treatment of calcific periarthritis of the hand.
BACKGROUND: The main purposes of this study were to assess the levels of parenting stress in the mothers of children with congenital hand or foot differences and to evaluate the effects of this stress on the preferred roles of mothers in surgical decision-making for their children. METHODS: This study included 89 mothers of children with polydactyly of the hand, polydactyly of the foot, a hypoplastic thumb, or macrodactyly. The parenting stress level was assessed using the Parenting Stress Index
Patients with longstanding trigger finger may develop flexion contracture at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint that persists even after division of the A1 pulley. The purpose of this study was to explore the hypothesis that flexion deformity of the PIP joint in advanced trigger finger is caused by severe adhesion between the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendons. Ten freshly frozen cadaveric hands were used in the experiments. After preparat
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of internal fixation using multiple Kirschner wires (K-wires) for the fifth metatarsal base fracture. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 14 patients with a displaced fifth metatarsal base fracture. We measured the distance of fracture displacement on the foot oblique radiograph pre-and post-operatively. We evaluated the clinical results using the visual analog pain scale at six weeks and three months p
The metacercariae species have often been isolated from fresh water fish in Korea. In this study, we reported Clinostomum complanatum, a species of metacercariae isolated from gill and muscle of Korean barbel (Hemibarbus mylodon), a natural monument fresh water fish in Korea, by morphological observation. The excysted metacercariae, tongue-shaped and progenetic, were 3.11-4.62 mm in length and 0.90-1.43 mm in width. Fresh water fishes are known as the second intermediate hosts of C. complanatum.
