About the Lab
Professor Ji-soo Shim's research lab focuses on respiratory immunology and allergic airway diseases, with a particular emphasis on the impact of environmental exposures—such as chlorine, tobacco products (including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products), and inhaled irritants—on the development and exacerbation of asthma and allergic rhinitis. The lab investigates underlying immune mechanisms, especially involving innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), macrophages, and type 2 inflammation, using preclinical murine models and clinical cohort studies. It also explores the real-world effectiveness and safety of biologic therapies in severe asthma and asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), contributing to precision medicine in respiratory diseases. The lab integrates translational research to bridge basic immunology with clinical applications in chronic airway disorders.
