About the Lab

Professor Ji-yeon Byun's research lab specializes in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and its immunomodulatory effects in dermatological conditions. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying cytokine modulation—particularly TGF-β1 and IL-10—following PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and intense pulsed light (IPL) in skin cells such as HaCaT keratinocytes and fibroblasts. A key focus is understanding how sublethal PDT doses influence immune responses rather than inducing cell death, with applications in inflammatory skin disorders like psoriasis, acne, and lichen sclerosus.
