About the Lab
Professor Ji Young Oh's research lab focuses on translational and molecular medicine, with a strong emphasis on neurological and renal disorders, genetic causes of kidney disease, and the pathophysiology of electrolyte imbalances. The lab investigates gene therapy strategies for neurodevelopmental disorders such as Rett syndrome and MECP2 duplication syndrome, utilizing advanced viral vector systems and regulatory elements to achieve precise gene expression. Additionally, the lab explores the impact of nutritional supplements on physiological function and stamina, and examines cultural narratives in Korean drama to understand the construction of collective memory and emotional regulation in contemporary society.

15Hyponatremia (sodium levels of <135 mEq/L) is one of the most common electrolyte imbalances in clinical practice, especially in patients with neurologic diseases. Hyponatremia can cause cerebral edema and brain herniation; therefore, prompt diagnosis and proper treatment is important in preventing morbidity and mortality. Among various causes of hyponatremia, diagnosing syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) and cerebral/renal salt wasting syndrome (C/RSW) is difficult
The effects of a silk amino acid (SAA) preparation on the physical stamina and male reproductive function of mice were investigated. Eight-week-old male ICR mice (29-31 g) were orally administered SAA (50, 160 or 500 mg/kg) for 44 d during 30-min daily swimming exercise. The mice were subjected to a weight-loaded (5% of body weight) forced swimming on the 14th, 28th and 42nd day to determine maximum swimming time, and after a 2-d recovery period (treated with SAA without swimming exercise), para
Inactivating mutations and the duplication of methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2), respectively, mediate Rett syndrome (RTT) and MECP2 duplication syndrome. These disorders underscore the conceptual dose-dependent risk posed by MECP2 gene therapy for mosaic RTT patients. Recently, a miRNA-Responsive Autoregulatory Element (miRARE) mitigated the dose-dependent toxicity posed by self-complementary adeno-associated viral vector serotype 9 (AAV9) miniMECP2 gene therapy (scAAV9/miniMECP2-myc) in mic
Our results indicate that noninfectious complications of PD are common, though they hardly lead to catheter removal or HD in pediatric patients on PD.
Understanding the genetic causes of kidney disease is essential for accurate diagnosis and could lead to improved therapeutic strategies and prognosis. To accurately and promptly identify the genetic background of kidney diseases, we applied a targeted next-generation sequencing gene panel including 203 genes associated with kidney disease, as well as diseases originating in other organs with mimicking symptoms of kidney disease, to analyze 51 patients with nonspecific nephrogenic symptoms, foll
Neutrophil apoptosis is a constitutive process that can be enhanced or delayed by signals triggered by various stimuli. In this work, we investigated the action mechanism of phospholipase D (PLD) and its expression in the inhibition of spontaneous and Fas-mediated apoptosis. Anti-Fas antibody-stimulated apoptosis of neutrophils was significantly blocked by the exogenous addition of bacterial PLD from Streptomyces chromofuscus (scPLD), and neutrophils cultured for 24 h in the presence of anti-Fas
Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) include a variety of heterogeneous genetic disorders in which defects in the immune system lead to an increased susceptibility to infections and other complications. Accurate, prompt diagnosis of IEI is crucial for treatment plan and prognostication. In this study, clinical utility of clinical exome sequencing (CES) for diagnosis of IEI was evaluated. For 37 Korean patients with suspected symptoms, signs, or laboratory abnormalities associated with IEI, CES that c
VOCs removal under humid conditions is an important issue in the various industries. However, adsorption capacity of commercial coconut-shell–based activated carbon (CAC) is diminishedconsiderably in high relative humidity. In this study, we prepared resin-based activated carbon (RAC)from strong cation-exchange resins consisting of polystyrene with divinylbenzene, and investigatedbenzene adsorption characteristics under humid conditions. The results of water isotherm andbreakthrough experiments r
Through this study, we were able to confirm the value of WES as one of the diagnostic tools for PCD, which increases with TEM, rather than single gene tests. These results will prove useful to hospitals with limited access to PCD diagnostic testing but with relatively efficient in-house or outsourced access to genetic testing at a pre-symptomatic or early disease stage.
In old age, measures to cope with the natural phenomenon of aging and various diseases of the elderly due to the deterioration of physical function are also a challenge for this society. While interest in systematic health is increasing, it is true that awareness and interest in oral-related diseases is relatively lacking. This study aims to present basic data necessary to improve the quality of life for senior citizens aged 65 or older by improving the oral dryness caused by systemic health. By
