About the Lab

Professor Jin Sup Yeom's research lab specializes in spinal surgery innovation, with a strong focus on improving the accuracy, safety, and outcomes of spinal interventions. Key research directions include robot-assisted spinal surgery, particularly in pedicle screw fixation and instrumented fusion, as well as the biological and inflammatory responses in intervertebral disc degeneration using regenerative therapies like platelet-rich plasma. The lab also investigates complications in spinal instrumentation, such as cement leakage and vertebral artery injuries, emphasizing the importance of advanced imaging and quality control in minimizing surgical risks.

Leakage of cement in percutaneous transpedicular vertebroplasty for painful osteoporotic compression fractures
Jin S. Yeom, W.-J. Kim, Won-Sik Choy, Choon‐Ki Lee, Bong‐Soon Chang, Joon-Ki Kang
Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery - British Volume

e analysed the CT scans and radiographs of 76 vertebrae in 49 patients who underwent vertebroplasty for painful osteoporotic compression fractures. Leaks of cement were classified into three types: those via the basivertebral vein (type B), via the segmental vein (type S), and through a cortical defect (type C). More leaks were identified on CT scans than on radiographs by a factor of 1.5 (74/49). Most type-B (93%) and type-S (86%) leaks were missed or underestimated on a lateral radiograph whic

SJR Q2International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy and safety of an instrumented posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) using a robot-assisted minimally invasive (Robot-PLIF) or a conventional open approach (Freehand-PLIF). METHODS: Patients undergoing an instrumented PLIF were randomly assigned to be treated using a Robot-PLIF (37 patients) and a Freehand-PLIF (41 patients). RESULTS: For intrapedicular accuracy, there was no significant difference between the groups (P = 0.534)

SJR Q1Spine

For treatment of single or dual spinal lesions, observation with or without bracing seems to be sufficient. In patients with multifocal lesions, chemotherapy produces good results. For treatment of neurologic deficit, low-dose radiotherapy is favored. Patients who underwent surgery--especially curettage and anterior fusion--had the worst outcome.

SJR Q1Spine

First, this study demonstrates the adequacy of quality control of robot-assisted pedicle screw fixation even early in the application period based on the CUSUM analysis. Second, the CUSUM test can be a useful tool for monitoring of the quality of procedures related with spine surgery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with collagen matrix on human nucleus pulposus (NP) cell in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 (IL-1). NP cells from human disks were cultured in a monolayer and maintained in the collagen matrix prior to the addition of recombinant human IL-1 and TNF-α. After applying IL-1 and TNF-α, PRP prepared by using a commercially availab

SJR Q1Spine

Although vertebral artery groove and foramen violations were relatively common on postoperative CT scans, none were detected intraoperatively or on postoperative radiographs. Most alarmingly, 1 vertebral artery injury was undetected intraoperatively. Since a vertebral injury can be potentially catastrophic, this study emphasizes the inherent dangers associated with placement of C1 and C2 screws and underscores the importance of careful postoperative evaluation and surgical technique when inserti
