About the Lab

Professor Jin-Won Jang's research lab specializes in advanced manufacturing processes and mechanical design for fuel cell components, particularly focusing on metallic bipolar plates in molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs). The lab investigates forming processes such as slitting, preforming, and three-dimensional forming with an emphasis on minimizing defects like springback and material fracture. Key research directions include process optimization using finite element analysis, CFD simulation for flow uniformity in anode channels, and innovative tool design to enhance dimensional accuracy and performance. The lab integrates computational simulation with experimental validation to improve the efficiency and reliability of fuel cell systems.

The metallic bipolar plates of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) consist of a shielded slot plate and a center plate. Among these, the shielded slot plate (the current collector) supports the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) mechanically. The anode gases and the cathode gases pass through a space between individual slot patterns. The catalysts are located in the upper part of the shielded slot plate. Therefore, triple phase boundaries can be generated, and carbonate ions can act as the mobile

Compressive and Bending Behaviors of the Shielded Slot Plate Considering Forming Effect for Fuel Cell Application
C.W. Lee, D.Y. Yang, Dongwoo Kang, I.G. Chang, T.W. Lee
Transactions of Materials ProcessingOA

The metallic bipolar plates of the molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) are composed of shielded slot plates and a center-plate. The shielded slot plates support the center-plate and the membrane electrode assembly. Compressive forces are applied to the shielded slot plate in order to increase the contact area between shielded slot plates and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In the design of the shielded slot plate, it is necessary to predict the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate.

A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed to investigate flow characteristics in the anode channels and manifold of the internal reforming type molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC). Considering the computational difficulties associated with the size and geometric complexity of the MCFC system, the polyhedral meshes that can reduce mesh connectivity problems at the intersection of the channel and the manifold are adopted and chemical reactions inside the MCFC syste

Metallic bipolar plate for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of the shielded slot plate and the center plate. Among these, the center plate plays an important role in gas sealing. Therefore, manufacturing of the center plate is considered one of the key issues in MCFC. The center plate is manufactured by bending process. In bending process, springback and recoiling are two main problems. The aim of this article is to optimize the bending process of the center plate regardless of sprin

Design and Production of Hybrid Type Center Plate for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell

Transactions of Materials Processing

Employing the TRIZ problem solving technique, a hybrid-type center plate for the molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) was developed for the purpose of improving gas sealing and maintenance. The manufacturing method of the hybrid-type center plate was divided into a trimming operation and a two-step bending process. In the latter, a modified punch shape was used to reduce springback. Using finite element(FE) simulations, bending stresses in the thickness and the in-plane directions were computed and

Transactions of Materials ProcessingOA

The shielded slot plates for a molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) have a sheared corrugated trapezoidal pattern. In the FEM simulations for the production of the shielded slot plate, the user material subroutine VUMAT in the commercial FEM software ABAQUS was used to implement a ductile fracture criterion. The critical damage value for the ductile fracture criterion was determined by comparing the experimental results of the shearing process with the simulation results. Using the ductile fracture
