About the Lab

Professor Jina Kim's research lab focuses on advancing medical imaging and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes, particularly in pediatric and geriatric populations. The lab investigates innovative applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for functional tissue imaging, including Doppler, polarization-sensitive, and molecular imaging extensions, with translational potential in clinical diagnostics. Additionally, the lab explores surgical safety and outcomes in complex patient groups, such as infants with congenital heart disease and older adults with thyroid disorders, emphasizing individualized risk assessment. The team also examines the clinical and economic impact of procedural complications, such as arterial thrombosis after pediatric catheterization, using large-scale population databases.

SJR Q1Physics in Medicine and Biology

In the past decade, several functional extensions of optical coherence tomography (OCT) have emerged, and this review highlights key advances in instrumentation, theoretical analysis, signal processing and clinical application of these extensions. We review five principal extensions: Doppler OCT (DOCT), polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT), optical coherence elastography (OCE), spectroscopic OCT (SOCT), and molecular imaging OCT. The former three have been further developed with studies in both e

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified risk factors for femoral arterial thrombosis after paediatric cardiac catheterisation, but none of them have evaluated the clinical and economic significance of this complication at the population level. Therefore, we examined the national prevalence and economic impact of femoral arterial thrombosis after cardiac catheterisation in children. METHODS: Patients⩽18 years of age who underwent cardiac catheterisation were identified in the 2003-2009 Kids'

Laparoscopy can be performed safely in infants with CHD who need abdominal surgery. Although further studies may be useful in determining which infants with congenital cardiac disease benefit the most from use of laparoscopy, minimally invasive techniques can be applied to routine and complex abdominal procedures.
