About the Lab

Professor Jinguk Kim's research lab specializes in molecular oncology and translational cancer research, with a focus on identifying epigenetic biomarkers—particularly DNA methylation—associated with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The lab investigates tumor-specific methylation patterns in bronchial lavage samples to enable early detection, while also exploring the roles of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and gene-specific methylation in NSCLC pathogenesis. Additional research directions include the identification of novel oncogenic fusion transcripts, such as ALK-PTPN3 in NSCLC, and the biological impact of opioid receptor signaling in lung cancer progression. The lab integrates next-generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, and clinical pathology to advance precision oncology approaches.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify tumor-specific methylation in bronchial lavage for the early detection of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by differentiating the age-related methylation from the tumor-specific methylation in NSCLC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-five NSCLC patients and 127 cancer-free subjects participated in this study. Aberrant methylation at the promoters of the p16, Ras association domain family 1A (RASSF1A), fragile histidine triad (FHIT), H-cadherin, and ret

BACKGROUND: Despite many reports about the involvement of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) in human cancers, including nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the clinicopathologic significance of DNMTs in primary NSCLC remains to be elucidated. METHODS: The relation between the mRNA levels of DNMTs (1 and 3b) and the promoter methylation of the p16, RARbeta2, H-cadherin, GSTP1, RIZ, and FHIT genes and the clinicopathologic features in 102 fresh-frozen tissues and paraffin blocks were retrospectively s

An increasing number of chromosomal aberrations is being identified in solid tumors providing novel biomarkers for various types of cancer and new insights into the mechanisms of carcinogenesis. We applied next generation sequencing technique to analyze the transcriptome of the non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cell line H2228 and discovered a fusion transcript composed of multiple exons of ALK (anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase) and PTPN3 (protein tyrosine phosphatase, nonrecepto

The early outcomes after surgical treatment for pulmonary artery sarcoma were excellent, and the late outcomes in this series were no worse than those in the previous reports. We suggest that the use of cardiopulmonary bypass is important to obtain a complete resection and the completeness of the resection should be confirmed intraoperatively by frozen section biopsy of the resection margin.

BACKGROUND: Although the Nuss procedure has been widely adopted as a standard procedure in children with pectus excavatum, reports focusing on its use in adults are rare. We retrospectively reviewed postoperative results to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Nuss procedure in late adolescents and adults with pectus excavatum. METHODS: Between 2004 and 2007, a total of 44 patients (M:F = 38:6) with a median age of 20 underwent the Nuss procedure. The pectus bar was inserted under thoracoscop

In this study, we report a novel function of FCN3 (Ficolin 3), a secreted lectin capable of activating the complement pathway, as a tumor suppressor of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). First, the expression of FCN3 was strongly down-regulated in cancer tissues compared to matched normal lung tissues, and down-regulation of FCN3 was shown to be significantly correlated with increased mortality among LUAD patients. Interestingly, while ectopic expression of FCN3 led to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis i
