About the Lab
Professor Jinhee Son's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and systemic oncology, with a focus on the pathological diagnosis, prognostic biomarkers, and clinical behavior of rare and gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and adenocarcinomas of the gallbladder and breast. The lab emphasizes the role of immunohistochemical markers such as Ki-67, cytokeratin 17, and mean platelet volume (MPV) in predicting tumor behavior, recurrence, and patient survival. Through systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and tissue microarray studies, the lab aims to improve diagnostic accuracy and prognostic stratification in solid organ malignancies.

15The incidence of GEP-NET in Korea has shown a remarkable increase during the last decade, however, the distribution of tumors in the digestive system differs from that of western reports. Assessment of pathological parameters, including immunostaining, is crucial in understanding biological behavior of the tumor as well as predicting prognosis of patients with GEP-NET.
The aim of this study was to elucidate the diagnostic and prognostic roles of the mean platelet volume (MPV) in various malignant tumors through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The current study included 2,053 patients and 1,396 healthy subjects in 18 eligible studies. We performed a meta-analysis of MPV levels and the mean difference between healthy subjects and pre- and post-treatment patients. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on specific organs and platelet counts. In addition, th
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic relevance of the Ki-67 labeling index (LI) in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) through a systematic review, meta-analysis and diagnostic test accuracy review. METHOD: The study included 1,967 GIST cases from 24 eligible studies. We investigated the correlation between high Ki-67 LI and survival and the proper criteria for high Ki-67 LI. In addition, a diagnostic test accuracy review was conducted to evaluate the predictive rol
The overall discrepancy rate was 20.1 %. To reduce this rate, it is necessary to evaluate the DOI very cautiously, because it is correlated with other parameters. In particular, careful checking for SM-invasive cancer is required due to the high incidence of LVI irrespective of the depth of submucosal invasion.
Cytologic findings of mucocelelike tumor and mucinous carcinoma were different in cellularity, shape of cell clusters and nuclear features, although mucocelelike tumors having a carcinoma component were similar to mucinous carcinoma. Awareness of the cytologic findings of breast mucinous neoplasms is important to make a specific diagnosis.
Cytokeratin 17 (CK17), a basal/myoepithelial cell keratin, is a poor prognostic marker for cancers of organs such as the stomach, ovary, and breast as well as a useful diagnostic marker for pancreatobiliary adenocarcinoma. However, its expression pattern and prognostic significance have not been studied in gallbladder adenocarcinoma. We constructed a tissue microarray from samples from 82 consecutive patients with gallbladder adenocarcinoma treated by cholecystectomy at the Kangbuk Samsung Hospi
Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare, but well-recognized phenomenon. Here, we report a unique case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastatic to parathyroid adenoma. A 53-year-old-man with a history of HCC presented with hypercalcemia. It was found that he also had hyperparathyroidism with a hypoechoic mass in the lower portion of the right thyroid gland area. The patient underwent parathyroidectomy, and a mass measuring 1.5 × 1.0 cm was detected. Microscopic and immunohistochemical examinatio
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) immunohistochemistry (IHC) for ALK gene rearrangement in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) through systematic review, meta-analysis and diagnostic test accuracy review. METHODS: The current study included 11,806 NSCLC cases in 42 eligible studies. We performed concordance analyses between ALK IHC and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The diagnostic accuracy of ALK IHC was
