About the Lab
Professor Jiyeon Jeong's research lab specializes in the intersection of education technology, service science, and behavioral economics, with a strong focus on gamified learning, educational game design, and the psychological and cultural factors influencing consumer behavior in tourism and hospitality. The lab investigates how digital and immersive technologies—such as VR, mobile platforms, and gamification—can be effectively leveraged to enhance learning outcomes and user engagement across diverse age groups and cultural contexts. Additionally, the lab conducts rigorous empirical and conceptual research on service expectations, emotional labor, and economic impact modeling, particularly in tourism and education settings.

Abstract Scenarios were designed to investigate the influence of price–quality heuristics among participants from the United States, Korea, and China for different tourism and hospitality services, in different consuming situations and in different social group contexts. The results revealed that as the scenarios moved from consuming alone and with an acquaintance to with a close family member, participants in each culture had a greater propensity to select the higher price option. These tendenc
The conceptual arguments and empirical analyses in the article illustrate that when tourism organizations replicate economic impact analyses and/or compare their results with those reported by others, perceived differences often are specious because they are attributable to artifacts in multiplier measurement as well as to changes in the structure of host economies. Four sources of variation in multipliers that may result in specious comparisons are addressed: differences in specifications of th
A conceptual model articulating the nature of customer expectations and satisfaction over services was proposed with emotional factors. Five propositions about consumer emotional service expectations as a primary antecedent toward confirmation, perceived quality, and satisfaction were provided. As moderators, two dimensions of consumer detection of emotional labor (i.e., detecting deep acting and surface acting) were imposed on each of the relationships. Evidence demonstrated the roles of emotio
The potential influence of eight decisions made by researchers that are unlikely to be reported in economic impact analyses are identified and empirically tested. The data set was comprised of studies undertaken at nine state parks in Texas. Four of the decisions were categorized as being potentially relatively malignant in that they used obviously inappropriate procedures and were likely to substantially exaggerate expenditure estimates: using group weighting rather than individual weighting; o
This study examines the effects of health beliefs upon nature-based tourism (NBT) during COVID-19 by reporting the findings of a questionnaire that was administered to 278 Americans and 300 South Koreans. The perceived benefits changed the attitude and behavioral intentions toward NBT against COVID-19 in both countries. Intrapersonal barriers had a negative impact on participants’ attitude in both countries, whereas structural barriers acting on behavioral intentions were only observed in the Un
This study explores one of the biggest social issues in South Korea, that is, sex tourism, which is illegal but remains in high demand. The study recruited a total of 1,003 respondents, whose responses were analyzed to understand their intentions for sex tourism. Study 1 revealed that sex tourism intention was largely influenced by subjective norms and moderated by ethical awareness and knowledge of illegality. In Study 2, sex tourism intention non-significantly differed across three scenarios o
A low cost approach to estimating the economic impact on local communities of a comprehensive state park system is described. The expenditures of 51,603 visitors at 29 parks were collected, extrapolated to an additional 60 parks, and used as inputs to derive estimates of economic impact on the parks' local areas using four measures: labor income, value added, output and jobs. The potential of those kinds of analyses for positively influencing elected officials' budget decisions for parks is illu
