About the Lab

Professor Jong Mo Seo's research lab focuses on ophthalmic genetics and clinical ophthalmology, particularly the hereditary and clinical characteristics of retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa in Korean populations. The lab also investigates the impact of contact lens use on myopia and astigmatism progression, contributing to non-invasive management strategies for refractive errors. Additionally, the lab explores environmental and ecological factors affecting aquatic ecosystems, including estuarine systems and high mountain lakes, with a focus on invasive species and their ecological consequences. The integration of clinical ophthalmology with environmental health research highlights a unique interdisciplinary approach in vision science and ecological conservation.

Hereditary and Clinical Features of Retinitis Pigmentosa in Koreans
이선호, 유형곤, 서종모, 문상웅, 김상진, 정흠
Journal of Korean Medical Science

There has been no report about hereditary and clinical features of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in Koreans. To evaluate these, data were collected from 365 RP patients including age, gender, visual acuity (VA), spherical equivalent (SE) of refractive errors, funduscopic findings, color vision test, visual field score (VFS) obtained from Goldmann perimetry, and the inheritance patterns from pedigrees. Simplex RP was the most common inheritance pattern (61.9%); followed by autosomal recessive RP (17.3

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Saemangeum Reservoir in South Korea is an estuarine system enclosed by a dyke construction, where seawater inflow and retained water outflow are managed by the opening/closing of sluice gates installed in the southern part of the dyke. An exchange of the reservoir water can cause spatiotemporal fluctuations in the salinity and trophic state, which are major drivers determining variation in the composition of biological communities in estuarine systems. Here, we investigated the seasonal and spat

Invaders they are a‐changing†: A recent, unexpected surge of invasive loaches in Catalonia
Miguel Clavero, Jongmo Suh, Nati Franch, Enric Aparicio, Teresa Buchaca, Jenny Caner, Sergi Garcia‐Rodriguez, Francesc Llimona, Quim Pou‐Rovira, Rafel Rocaspana, Marc Ventura
SJR Q1Freshwater BiologyOA

Abstract Risk analyses for invasive species often assume that the characteristics of future invaders will resemble those already successful, but these features may change. Here, we use data from more than 3,500 fish sampling events, sequencing of mitochondrial and nuclear genes and analyses of several traits describing non‐native fish to describe the irruption and rapid expansion of non‐native loaches in Catalonia, north‐east Iberian Peninsula, and framing this surge in the knowledge of previous

SJR Q1Biological ConservationOA

Despite being naturally fishless, the widespread introduction of trout and minnows is threatening the conservation of high mountain lakes all over the world. Previous studies have reported that amphibians quickly disappear after trout introduction, followed by many conspicuous invertebrates. Here, we have studied the effects of minnows versus trout on the littoral macroinvertebrate community of 54 high mountain lakes from the Pyrenees, covering a gradient of environmental characteristics. Smartphone technology has spread rapidly around the globe. According to a report released by the Korea Information Society Development Institute, about 95% of Koreans aged more than 30 years old owned smartphones. Recently, blood pressure (BP) measurement using a photoplethysmography-based smartphone algorithm paired with the smartwatch is continuously evolving. In this document, the Korean Society of Hypertension intends to remark the current results of smartphone / smartwatch-based BP measurem

Silicon retinal tack for the epiretinal fixation of the polyimide electrode array
서종모, 백승준, 김의태, 변상원, 이아라, 조동일, 김성준, 유형곤, 유영석, 정흠

Silicon-micromachined retinal tacks were developed for the xation of the epiretinal-type retina-stimulating microelectrodearray. Silicon retinal tacks were fabricated by using the silicon on insulator (SOI) process, a method of releasing silicon structuresin a SOI wafer. The dimensions of the retinal tack were substantially smaller than those of the conventional titanium tack, at 1.5 mmlong, 150l m wide, and 150l m thick. To enhance the durability and biocompatibility of the retinal tack, 3l m-t

SJR Q1AnimalsOA

The gold-spotted pond frog (Pelophylax chosenicus) is an endangered amphibian species in South Korea. In order to obtain ecological information regarding the gold-spotted pond frog’s habitat environment and biological interactions, we applied stable isotope analysis to quantify the ecological niche space (ENS) of frogs including black-spotted pond frogs (P. nigromaculatus) and bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) within the food web of two different habitats—an ecological wetland park and a rice

Electromagnetic Tracking of Needle Intervention for Sacral Nerve Stimulation Using the Image-Guided Surgery Toolkit (IGSTK)
나영진, 서종모, 김정

Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) is a therapeutic medical procedure that stimulates the sacral nerve using an electrode inserted near the sacral nerve to treat the conditions of overactive bladder and fecal incontinence. The primary challenge in the SNS procedure is that the physician inserts a needle to place an electrode through the narrow structure of the sacrum while relying on fluoroscopic images. We developed a navigation system which relies on an off-the-shelf electromagnetic tracking devic
