About the Lab

Professor Jong Seok Song's research lab focuses on ocular surface diseases, particularly dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), with an emphasis on the impact of environmental factors such as air pollution and nanoparticles on ocular health. The lab investigates the toxicological effects of airborne particulate matter—including titanium dioxide and carbon black nanoparticles—on corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells, as well as the immunological and inflammatory responses triggered by these exposures. Additionally, the lab explores clinical interventions, such as eyelid hygiene and intraocular lens design, to improve post-surgical outcomes in cataract patients. Their work bridges clinical ophthalmology with environmental toxicology and biomedical engineering.

Abstract Background To compare clinical outcomes and optical performance of a new monofocal with enhanced intermediate function intraocular lenses (IOLs) with that of conventional monofocal IOLs. Methods Sixty eyes of 30 patients who underwent phacoemulsification with bilateral implantation of the ICB00 (15 patients) or ZCB00 (15 patients) IOLs were enrolled. Binocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), and distance corrected intermediate visu

The Relationship Between Morphology and Function of the Meibomian Glands
Hyo Myung Kim, Youngsub Eom, Jong Suk Song
SJR Q2Eye & Contact Lens Science & Clinical Practice

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of dry eye disease (DED). Meibomian gland dysfunction is divided into two major categories based on meibomian gland secretion: low delivery and high delivery. The low-delivery states are further classified as either hyposecretory or obstructive subtype, and the high-delivery state is termed "hypersecretory MGD." Two parameters are commonly used to evaluate meibomian gland function: lipid layer thickness and meibum quality and expressibility. T

SJR Q1Cornea

Reducing the applied concentration or decreasing the exposure time might be a good modality for reducing the potential MMC toxicity. The applied MMC concentration had greater effects on the aqueous MMC concentration and apoptosis in the stromal cells than the exposure time.

Abstract The impact of particulate matter (PM) on ocular surface health has attracted increased attention in recent years. Previous studies have reported that differences in the chemical composition of PM can affect the toxicological response. However, available information on the toxic effects of chemical components of PM on the ocular surface is insufficient. In this paper, we aimed to investigate the toxicity effects of chemical components of PM on the ocular surface, focusing on the effects

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of eyelid hygiene on subjective symptoms, anterior blepharitis, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) after cataract surgery. Subjects with obstructive MGD who underwent cataract surgery were randomly divided into two groups. In the eyelid hygiene group, eyelid hygiene was performed twice a day for 10 days from 3 days before to 1 week after cataract surgery. The control group did not perform eyelid hygiene. A subjective symp

Purpose: To investigate the ocular immune response following exposure to airborne titanium dioxide (TiO2) microparticles. Methods: Rats in the TiO2-exposed group (n = 10) were exposed to TiO2 particles for 2 hours twice daily for 5 days, while the controls (n = 10) were not. Corneal staining score and tear lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were measured to evaluate ocular surface damage, serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G and E were assayed by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the size of

Human Corneal Endothelial Cells Employ Phosphorylation of p27Kip1at Both Ser10 and Thr187 Sites for FGF-2-Mediated Cell Proliferation via PI 3-Kinase
Jung Goo Lee, Jong-Suk Song, Ronald E. Smith, EunDuck P. Kay
SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

FGF-2 stimulated cell proliferation in hCECs; the FGF-2 action was completely blocked by pathway-specific inhibitors for PI 3-kinase (LY294002) and MEK1/2 (U0126), respectively. Using immunoblotting, the authors showed that FGF-2 induced phosphorylation of p27 at both serine 10 (Ser10) and threonine 187 (Thr187) sites. These effects were also completely blocked by LY294002 or U0126. The authors then determined cross-talk between PI 3-kinase and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2; blo

SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

Purpose: A topical mucolytic agent, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), has been used to create an animal model without the intestinal mucus layer. In this study, we investigated the effects of topical NAC on the tears and ocular surface. Methods: NAC-treated models were established by topically administering 10% NAC four times daily for 5 days in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Clinical parameters and the expression of mucin proteins and genes were evaluated. Alterations in the conjunctival epithelium and goblet

Induction of FGF-2 Synthesis by IL-1β in Aqueous Humor through P13-Kinase and p38 in Rabbit Corneal Endothelium
Jong-Suk Song, Jung Goo Lee, EunDuck P. Kay
SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

These data suggest that after transcorneal freezing, IL-1beta released by PMNs into the aqueous humor stimulates FGF-2 synthesis in corneal endothelium via PI3-kinase and p38.
