About the Lab

Professor Jongchan Kim's research lab specializes in advanced optoelectronic materials and devices, with a primary focus on enhancing the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through precise control of molecular orientation and innovative outcoupling structures. The lab investigates fundamental optical phenomena such as transition-dipole moment alignment using advanced techniques like Fourier-plane imaging microscopy, and develops non-intrusive, wavelength- and angle-independent light extraction methods using high-index waveguides and dielectric reflectors. Additionally, the lab applies machine learning to environmental challenges, such as predicting cyanobacterial blooms, demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach to sustainable technology and data-driven science.

Systematic Control of the Orientation of Organic Phosphorescent Pt Complexes in Thin Films for Increased Optical Outcoupling

Orienting light-emitting molecules relative to the substrate is an effective method to enhance the optical outcoupling of organic light-emitting devices. Platinum(II) phosphorescent complexes enable facile control of the molecular alignment due to their planar structures. Here, the orientation of Pt(II) complexes during the growth of emissive layers is controlled by two different methods: modifying the molecular structure and using structural templating. Molecules whose structures are modified b

Efficient Outcoupling of Organic Light-Emitting Devices Using a Light-Scattering Dielectric Layer
Jongchan Kim, Yue Qu, Caleb Coburn, Stephen R. Forrest
SJR Q1ACS Photonics

It has long been a challenge to develop a highly efficient outcoupling method for organic light-emitting diodes that is independent of wavelength and viewing angle, as well as being nonintrusive into the device structure. Here, we demonstrate a transparent, top emitting structure integrated with a high index of refraction waveguide layer and a rough, dielectric diffuse reflector that eliminates plasmonic, waveguide, and substrate modes without introducing wavelength and viewing-angle dependence.

SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Recently, sustainable growth and development has become an important issue for governments and corporations. However, maintaining sustainable development is very difficult. These difficulties can be attributed to sociocultural and political backgrounds that change over time [1]. Because of these changes, the technologies for sustainability also change, so governments and companies attempt to predict and manage technology using patent analyses, but it is very difficult to predict the rapidly chan

SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

A humanoid, which refers to a robot that resembles a human body, imitates a human’s intelligence, behavior, sense, and interaction in order to provide various types of services to human beings. Humanoids have been studied and developed constantly in order to improve their performance. Humanoids were previously developed for simple repetitive or hard work that required significant human power. However, intelligent service robots have been developed actively these days to provide necessary informa

Using Fourier-Plane Imaging Microscopy for Determining Transition-Dipole-Moment Orientations in Organic Light-Emitting Devices

SJR Q1Physical Review AppliedOA

We use Fourier-plane imaging microscopy (FIM) to determine the transition-dipole-moment orientation in doped organic emissive thin films. The use of FIM enables precise, sensitive, and rapid measurement of dipole orientation in the emission layer of an organic light-emitting device (OLED). An optical model of a stratified birefringent multilayer is introduced for interpreting results obtained by FIM. Using the model, we determine the average orientation of transition-dipole-moment vectors of thr

A Classification-Based Machine Learning Approach to the Prediction of Cyanobacterial Blooms in Chilgok Weir, South Korea
Jongchan Kim, Andréja Jonoski, Dimitri Solomatine
SJR Q1WaterOA

Cyanobacterial blooms appear by complex causes such as water quality, climate, and hydrological factors. This study aims to present the machine learning models to predict occurrences of these complicated cyanobacterial blooms efficiently and effectively. The dataset was classified into groups consisting of two, three, or four classes based on cyanobacterial cell density after a week, which was used as the target variable. We developed 96 machine learning models for Chilgok weir using four classi

Purpose: Computed tomography (CT) is the most useful diagnostic modality for staging renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However,CT is limited in its ability to predict renal sinus fat invasion (SFI). Here, we aimed to evaluate whether preoperative neutrophil-tolymphocyteratio (NLR) could predict pathological SFI in patients with RCC of ≤7 cm for whom preoperative imaging reveals potentialrenal SFI. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 1311 patients who underwent extirpative renal s

SJR Q1ACS PhotonicsOA

We demonstrate a hybrid light-emitting device (LED) employing a chemical-vapor-deposition grown, centimeter-scale monolayer of WS2 (mWS2) as the active luminescent material embedded within conductive organic layers. The active area of the hybrid LED is composed of mWS2, located within the organic host matrix, sandwiched between the hole- and electron-transporting organic layers. The mWS2 shows fast exciton decay and efficient light outcoupling compared to the organic dyes used for OLEDs, whereas

We demonstrate an alternating current (AC) driven light emitting capacitor in which the color of the emission spectra can be changed via an applied AC frequency. The device has a simple metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor structure with an organic emissive layer, enabling facile fabrication processing. The organic emissive layer comprises a thin, submonolayer low energy dye layer underneath a thick host matrix (∼30 nm) with higher energy emitting dyes. The emission of the lower energy dyes

Recently, research related to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is active. In this paper, EfficientDet Fusion Framework for multi-spectral pedestrian detection is constructed through Sum, Max, and Concatenation at the feature level. In the experiment, it was confirmed that the performance improvement of the convergence multispectral network was quantitatively improved by about 10% compared to the single spectral network. In addition, it shows that the shortcomings of a single spectral ca

Oligometastasis has been proposed as an intermediate stage of cancer spread between localized disease and widespread metastasis. Oligometastatic malignancy is now being diagnosed more frequently as the result of improvements in diagnostic modalities such as functional imaging. The importance of oligometastasis in managing metastatic prostate cancer is that it is possible to treat with a curative aim by metastasis-directed or local therapy in selected patients. Many studies have shown that these

Nanoscale Mapping of Morphology of Organic Thin Films
Jongchan Kim, Shaocong Hou, Haonan Zhao, Stephen R. Forrest
SJR Q1Nano Letters

We determine precise nanoscale information about the morphologies of several organic thin film structures using Fourier plane imaging microscopy (FIM). We used FIM microscopy to detect the orientation of molecular transition dipole moments from an extremely low density of luminescent dye molecules, which we call "morphology sensors". The orientation of the sensor molecules is driven by the local film structure and thus can be used to determine details of the host morphology without influencing i
