About the Lab

Professor Jongheon Kim's research lab specializes in interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of materials science, biomedical engineering, and public health. The lab investigates the engineering of 2D materials—particularly graphene—through ion irradiation to tailor electrical and surface properties for advanced electronic applications. Concurrently, the lab conducts clinical and epidemiological research focusing on viral transmission risks among high-risk populations, such as people who inject drugs, and explores personalized health care solutions, including diet recommendations for cardiovascular disease prevention. The lab also contributes to energy efficiency in buildings through innovative in-situ measurement techniques for thermal performance of building envelopes.

Work function engineering of single layer graphene by irradiation-induced defects
Jong‐Hun Kim, Jin Heui Hwang, Joonki Suh, Sefaattin Tongay, Sangku Kwon, Chan-Cuk Hwang, Junqiao Wu, Jeong Young Park
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

We report the tuning of electrical properties of single layer graphene by α-beam irradiation. As the defect density increases upon irradiation, the surface potential of the graphene changes, as determined by Kelvin probe force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy studies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicate that the formation of C/O bonding is promoted as the dose of irradiation increases when at atmospheric conditions. Our results show that the surface potential of the graphene can b

Design of Diet Recommendation System for Healthcare Service Based on User Information
Jong‐Hun Kim, Junghyun Lee, Jee-Song Park, Youngho Lee, Kee-Wook Rim

In the recent aging society, studies on health care services have been actively conducted to provide quality services to medical consumers in wire and wireless environments. However, there are some problems in these health care services due to the lack of personalized service and the uniformed way in services. For solving these issues, studies on customized services in medical markets have been processed. However, because a diet recommendation service is only focused on the personal disease info

Reliability Field Test of the Air–Surface Temperature Ratio Method for In Situ Measurement of U-Values
Seo-Hoon Kim, Jong‐Hun Kim, Hakgeun Jeong, Kyoo-Dong Song
SJR Q1EnergiesOA

This study proposes the air–surface temperature ratio (ASTR) method as an in situ measurement method to rapidly and accurately measure wall U-values in existing houses. Herein, the wall U-values were measured in situ applying the heat flow meter (HFM) method of ISO 9869-1 and the ASTR method. The results obtained using the HFM and ASTR methods were compared, and the relative error rate and accuracy of the measurements were analyzed. The aging rates of the wall U-values were compared and analyzed

Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with cognitive impairments. However, the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the topography of cortical thinning have not yet been studied in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the topography of cortical thinning related to cardiovascular risk factors and the relationships among cardiovascular risk factors, white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and cortical atrophy. Participants included 226 patien

Premature Deaths Attributable to Long-term Exposure to Ambient Fine Particulate Matter in the Republic of Korea
Jong‐Hun Kim, In‐Hwan Oh, Jae‐Hyun Park, Hae‐Kwan Cheong
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Premature deaths due to long-term exposure to PM2.5 accounted for 6.4% of all deaths in Korea. However, individual efforts alone cannot prevent the effects of air pollution. This disease burden study can serve as a basis for the establishment of government policies and budgets and can be used to assess the effectiveness of environmental health policies.

Increasing Number of Scarlet Fever Cases, South Korea, 2011–2016
Jong‐Hun Kim, Hae‐Kwan Cheong
SJR Q1Emerging infectious diseasesOA

The increasing number of reported scarlet fever cases during 2011‒2016 in the National Notifiable Infectious Disease database in South Korea occurred because of increased overall reporting and expanded reporting criteria rather than because of increasing scarlet fever incidence. Further increases are anticipated because of other expansions in reporting requirements.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal and intestinal infectious disease caused by inadequate drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is not only a great concern in developing countries but also a problem in low-income populations and rural areas in developed countries. In this study, we assessed the exposure to inadequate WASH in Korea and estimated the burden of disease attributable to inadequate WASH. METHODS: We used observational data on water supply, drinking water, sewage treatment rate, and hand w
