About the Lab
Professor Jonghun Kim's research lab specializes in clinical and translational studies focusing on autoimmune blistering diseases, vascular malformations, and advanced cardiovascular interventions. The lab investigates disease mechanisms and clinical outcomes in conditions such as bullous pemphigoid and pectus carinatum, utilizing innovative imaging and diagnostic techniques like 3D body surface scanning. A significant focus is also placed on endovascular and surgical solutions for complex aortic pathologies, including the evaluation of novel hybrid prostheses in thoracic aortic surgery.

15Background: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease characterized by tissue- bound and circulating autoantibodies directed against BP180 and/or BP230 antigens. Various inflammatory cells are involved in the development of blister in BP. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between peripheral leukocyte counts and BP severity. Methods: We retrospectively included 60 patients with BP, who had not been treated with systemic steroid at the
Angiokeratoma is a rare vascular malformation of the upper dermis that presents clinically as deep red to blue-black in color and tends to take a diverse configuration without self-limiting. Here, we reported dermoscopic findings by two cases of angiokeratoma; solitary angiokeratoma and angiokeratoma circumscriptum. A 24-year-old male presented with a 2-months history of 5 mm sized black colored papule on the right buttock. A dermoscopic pattern characterized by red and dark lacunae, whitish vei
Background: Radiographic modalities have been commonly used to evaluate pectus carinatum (PC), and compressive orthotic bracing is the most widely accepted treatment method. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of 3-dimensional (3D) body surface scanning as an alternative modality for the evaluation of PC. \n\nMethods: The medical records of 63 patients with PC who were treated with compressive orthotic bracing therapy between July 2017 and February 2019 were retrospectively analy
We reported a multicenter Asian case series with the novel FET hybrid prosthesis demonstrating the feasibility and safety of promising initial clinical outcomes. The technique of circumferential reinforcement of vascular anastomosis for hemostasis may be one of the methods for lowering the rates of re-sternotomy for hemostasis, and proper surgical or transfusion strategies would overcome the excessive oozing of the prosthesis. Long-term follow-up is required for further evaluation of aortic path
OBJECTIVES: In this cohort study, we aimed to assess the 1-year clinical outcomes of using the E-vita Open NEO™ hybrid prosthesis for total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk (FET) to repair extensive aortic pathologies. METHODS: We reviewed individuals who underwent thoracic aortic surgery between April 2021 and March 2023 from the Gangnam Severance Aortic Registry. Exclusion criteria included ascending aortic replacement, 1 or 2 partial arch replacement, descending aortic replacement
Minimally invasive cryoablation is often considered for lung tumor patients with high surgical risk or inoperable metastatic lung tumors. Cryoablation is a type of thermal percutaneous ablation in which argon and helium gases are delivered via a cryoprobe to induce tissue freezing and necrosis. We report the case of a 23-year-old woman who had suffered from multiple pulmonary endometriosis with frequent intermittent hemoptysis during menstruation for 6 years prior to her visit. She was treated w

Objectives: To date, there is no consensual definition of what constitutes a postoperative recurrence of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), despite there being many studies reporting a high incidence of recurrence. This study aims to describe the long-term recurrence rates of pneumothorax and to suggest a possible way to differentiate recurrence events based on temporal patterns. Methods: This single-center study retrospectively evaluated all postoperative recurrence of PSP from January 200
Background\nSevoflurane is widely used to ambulatory pediatric anesthesia. But, sevoflurane is associated with a high incidence of emergence agitation in children. In this study, we examined the effect of single intravenous lidocaine prior to extubation on emergence agitation and cough in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy.\n\nMethods\nAll patients received a standardized anesthetic regimen with 2-3% sevoflurane in 50% O2/N2O after anesthetic induction with intravenous glycopyrrolate 0.004 m
Background: Acral melanoma occurs on glabrous skin or the nail apparatus and is distinct from ultraviolet-related melanoma due to differing genetic alteration patterns. Although the pathogenesis of acral melanoma is not well understood, mechanical stress is thought to induce acral melanoma. The incidence of gene mutation and promoter methylation has been reported in tumors from acral melanoma; however, an association between genetic/epigenetic alterations and mechanical stress in acral melanoma
Background: Sebaceous neoplasm is a rare subgroup of appendageal tumors that differentiate towards sebaceous adnexal structures of the skin and are known to be associated with visceral malignancy. Objective: We aimed to analyze and compare the clinical data including the past history of associated visceral malignancy in patients with sebaceous carcinoma (SC) and benign sebaceous neoplasms (BSN), such as sebaceous adenomas and sebaceomas. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of consecut
Chondroid syringoma is a rare epithelial tumor with an adnexal gland origin, and it clinically presents as a slowly growing benign nodule. A 57-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of 1×1 cm subcutaneous firm nodule on her scalp. The biopsy specimen showed a basophilic stroma and small tubular structures that were lined by a single layer of epithelium, small groups of epithelial cells and solitary epithelial cells. The tumor cells showed positive immunoreactivity for S-100. Herein, we
An ingrown toenail, which causes pain especially with secondary infection, and is one of the most common diseases of toenails. It becomes difficult for a patient to walk and this subsequently impairs the quality of life. Surgical procedures, including total or partial excision of the nail bed, phenolization and the carbon dioxide laser matricectomy method, are commonly performed to treat this problem. The disadvantages of these methods include their complexity, the pain, the time required to do

Total arch replacement for aortic dissection is traditionally associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Here, we share our strategies for improving surgical outcomes such as Y incision, unilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion, Teflon felt neo-media formation, and reinforcement of the anastomosis site.
