About the Lab
Professor Joo-Young Jeon's research lab specializes in advanced forecasting methodologies and signal processing for energy systems and wireless communications. The lab focuses on probabilistic and density forecasting in renewable energy, particularly wind power, as well as value-at-risk modeling in financial time series using hybrid time-series and market-implied volatility approaches. Additionally, the lab develops innovative RF and microwave circuit designs, including low-noise amplifiers and power amplifiers with load-insensitive characteristics, for next-generation wireless and smart grid applications.

15Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of th
Of the various renewable energy resources, wind power is widely recognized as one of the most promising. The management of wind farms and electricity systems can benefit greatly from the availability of estimates of the probability distribution of wind power generation. However, most research has focused on point forecasting of wind power. In this article, we develop an approach to producing density forecasts for the wind power generated at individual wind farms. Our interest is in intraday data
ABSTRACT This paper proposes value‐at risk (VaR) estimation methods that are a synthesis of conditional autoregressive value at risk (CAViaR) time series models and implied volatility. The appeal of this proposal is that it merges information from the historical time series and the different information supplied by the market's expectation of risk. Forecast‐combining methods, with weights estimated using quantile regression, are considered. We also investigate plugging implied volatility into th
This paper proposes a novel load mismatch detection and correction technique to develop a load insensitive power amplifier (PA). The presented algorithm for the technique can simply be implemented by handling load impedance as a region rather than a point. Based on the detection results, a tunable output matching network (TOMN) corrects a mismatched load and transforms it into a desired region, thereby dramatically enhancing PA performances under load mismatched condition with a minimal compromi
A 17/24 GHz dual-band CMOS low-noise amplifier (LNA) for ISM-band application is presented. The proposed LNA employs a positive feedback transmission-line-based LC-ladder network to obtain dual-band operation and reduce power consumption. For low cost, the LNA has been fabricated using a 0.18 µm mixed-signal CMOS process. The implemented LNA shows gains of 9.2 and 12 dB, and noise figures (NF) of 5.7 and 6.4 dB at 18 and 24.5 GHz, respectively. The proposed LNA exhibits 8 mW power consumption fr
In the effort to achieve carbon neutrality through a decentralized electricity market, accurate short-term load forecasting at low aggregation levels has become increasingly crucial for various market participants' strategies. Accurate probabilistic forecasts at low aggregation levels can improve peer-to-peer energy sharing, demand response, and the operation of reliable distribution networks. However, these applications require not only probabilistic demand forecasts, which involve quantificati
Applicability of a widely accepted watershed-based water quality assessment tool (BASINS) and its associated watershed model (WinHSPF) was evaluated on the Seamangeum watershed in Korea. The study site is the largest polder project area in Korea and its environmental quality has been debated for the last five years. BASINS was found to be a convenient and powerful tool for assessment of watershed characteristics, and provided various tools to delineate the watershed into land segments and river
A multi-mode multi-band (MMMB) power amplifier module with integrated duplexer (PAMiD) is developed for mobile handset applications. To reduce size and improve RF performance of Tx front-end, the PAMiD consolidates most of the post-PA networks as well as PA block in a single module. This paper summarizes the RF requirements and challenges addressed in recent years that pursue PAMiD development, and discusses its design consideration.
Abstract Amid increasing concerns about the impact of climate change on financial asset pricing, this paper investigates how drought risk affects stock returns in the U.S. energy sector over a thirty-year period (1990–2019). To this end, we ranked energy companies based on the long-term trend of the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) to compare stock performance between groups experiencing the most significant increases and decreases in drought risk. Our analysis indicates that firms located i
Over the last few years there has been an extraordinary surge of social networking and microblogging services. Twitter is a social network that focuses on social and news media. The Twitter data stream allows access to tweets, timestamps and locations of users. This enables us to capture the trends and patterns of rapidly evolving worldwide events. We use the Twitter data stream for the prediction of consumer preferences in the movie industry and estimate how successful the movie will be in the
A ruggedness improved multi-band radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA) module applicable to mobile handsets, which are required to survive against a serious load impedance change under extreme power and bias conditions, is presented. In this method, the load impedance of PA is adaptively adjusted with a digitally controlled impedance corrector to keep the PA safe by performing a load mismatch detection. The impedance mismatch detector, impedance corrector, and other RF switches were all inte
