About the Lab
Professor Joong-Yang Moon's research focuses on the historical development of science and technology in Korea, particularly during the Joseon dynasty, with an emphasis on the indigenization of Chinese scientific traditions and the reception of Western science. His work explores the formation of Korea’s scientific identity through calendrical systems, astronomical discourse, and intellectual exchanges in East Asia. He investigates how Korean scholars reinterpreted and localized Chinese and later Western scientific knowledge, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, to assert scholarly and political autonomy.

15Science and Technology in King Sejong’s Era: Questioning their Independence from the Chinese Ones
The statements, ‘the difference of the Wind and Earth’ or ‘the difference of the wind and weather’ which we can often see in the 15th century literatures of Korea, have been considered to imply the Korean uniqueness. This paper is checking out if the statements really imply the meaning of the Korean Uniqueness. In conclusion, I do not suppose the statements can be understood to imply the difference between ‘our’ Korea and ‘their’ China. I examined in what contexts the statements of ‘the differen
I would like to characterize the project to formulate Chosŏn's own calendar, based on Shixian li system(時憲曆), during the 18th century as an effort to establish a national calendar, a step forward from the practice using the ‘local calendar (鄕曆).’ It refers to a national calendar of Chosŏn, both of whose formality and function are as reliable as Chinese ones and worthy of the sovereign status of Chosŏn dynasty, not a mere local calendar dependent upon the Chinese one that was serving as a univers
The Understanding of Western Science and the Writing of the Jeong-Gwan-Pyeon by the 19th-century Sirak Scholar Yi Cheong Moon, Joong-yang* Yi Cheong (1792-1861) was an unique disciple who had a high degree of scientific knowledge on Astronomy, and Jeong-Gwan-Pyeon was also the unique and unusual book, written by Yi Cheong alone, dealing with comprehensive and a high degree of Astronomy among Great Sirak scholar, Jeong Yagyong school. Because Jeong Yagyong did not write any compre
Scholars of the Fang Yizhi School were famous for their unique cosmological discourse in which they metaphysically reexamined and reinterpreted Western science. This paper attempts to examine how such discourse of the Fang Yizhi School influenced Korean cosmological contemplation in the 19th century. It is really interesting to note that none of the cosmological writings of the Fang Yizhi School and the Konggigezhi, a book on medieval Western science, was introduced to Korea until the 19th centu
This paper shows interesting cosmological thoughts on heaven and earth discussed in Oju-yeonmun-jangjeon-san-go by Korean scholar, Yi Kyu-gyeong(1788-1856), in the early nineteenth century. Astronomical and geographical knowledge written in Oju- yeonmun-jangjeon-san-go were fragments of old and new ones which came from different origins and filiation, so could not be constructed systematized and synthesized eventually. So, I selected three interesting topics (cosmographical map with nine layered
Even though they were perceived as less interesting and historically less valuable than their eighteenth century counterparts, we can find noteworthy astronomical and geographical activities and products in nineteenth-century Korea from the following: piecemeal knowledge in the natural sciences in Oju yeonmun jangjeon sango (Random Expatiations of Oju) in the early nineteenth century, Choe Hangi’s writings during the 1830s and 1840s, cosmological discussions of Yi Cheong and Choe Hangi in the mi
In-depth research on the knowledge of nature, especially cosmology, of the so-called Silhak ("Practical Learning") or late-Choson Dynasty intellectuals began to be conducted in the 1970's and the 1980's. Researches by Yi Yong-bom and Ogawa Haruhisa, however, are interesting because of their extremely opposing judgements on the historical significance of the knowledge of nature held by Silhak intellectuals, on Kim Sok-mun's (1658-1735) cosmology in particular. Evaluating Kim's theory of cosmic st
