About the Lab
Professor Joonseok Yang's research lab focuses on political behavior, partisanship, and democratic norms, with an emphasis on how partisan identities and affective polarization shape citizens' evaluations of democratic and undemocratic political conduct. The lab investigates the psychological mechanisms behind partisan rationalization and the role of emotional polarization in distorting democratic perceptions. Using experimental and survey-based methods, particularly in the context of East Asian democracies like South Korea, the lab explores the dynamics of political cognition and institutional legitimacy. Current research also examines the interplay between identity, ideology, and democratic resilience in polarized political environments.

1This study examines how partisan identities shape citizens’ perceptions of democratic and undemocratic behavior by politicians. Drawing on theories of partisan-motivated reasoning, we argue that partisan identities serve as powerful directional goals that unconsciously bias how citizens evaluate political behaviors against democratic principles.
