About the Lab
Professor Jun Seok Choi's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical diagnostics, neurobiology, and regulatory science. The lab investigates clinical risk factors in oral surgery, particularly nerve injury during third molar extraction, explores the role of drug metabolites in adverse drug reactions, and examines metabolic biomarkers using advanced imaging techniques such as 18F-FDG PET/CT. Additionally, the lab contributes to understanding molecular mechanisms in neurological disorders through gene expression profiling and explores regulatory and cultural frameworks for emerging digital media technologies like OTT platforms.

15The value of skin tests in the diagnosis of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) has been limited. Lack of knowledge as to the nature of drug allergens has contributed to these limitations. Several reports have addressed the roles of metabolites in cutaneous ADRs and skin testing. We evaluated the role of a carbamazepine (CBZ) metabolite on the results obtained from patch tests, using CBZ and its main metabolite 10, 11-epoxide of CBZ (CBZ-epoxide), on 13 patients with CBZ-induced drug eruptions and 39
The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence and risk factors of possible inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury after extraction of the mandibular third molars. A total of 6182 patients were examined for 10,310 mandibular third molar teeth. Panoramic radiography and patients’ medical records were used to analyze age, gender, and impaction pattern of the mandibular third molar. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to investigate the detailed pathway of the inferior alveolar nerv
White petrolatum is known for its nonsensitizing and nonirritating properties. Only a few cases of allergic contact dermatitis to white petrolatum have been reported. Although it is a rare event, the finding of contact sensitization to white petrolatum raises the potential problem of its usage of common topical agents or vehicles for patch testing. We herein report a case of allergic contact dermatitis to white petrolatum.
Abstract Background Skeletal muscle glucose utilization is an important component of whole‐body glucose consumption in normal humans. Fluorine‐18‐labelled fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐d‐glucose ( 18 F‐FDG) is a non‐invasive molecular imaging probe for evaluating tissue glucose utilization. It remains unclear whether or not 18 F‐FDG uptake by skeletal muscle has utility as a biomarker for metabolic derangement. We investigated the utility of measurement of muscle 18 F‐FDG positron emission tomography/computed
Inductive expression of early growth response 1 (Egr-1) in neurons is associated with many forms of neuronal activity. However, only a few Egr-1 target genes are known in the brain. The results of this study demonstrate that Egr-1 knockout (KO) mice display impaired contextual extinction learning and normal fear acquisition relative to wild-type (WT) control animals. Genome-wide microarray experiments revealed 368 differentially expressed genes in the hippocampus of Egr-1 WT exposed to different
Multiple myeloma is a monoclonal plasma cell proliferation disorder with various symptoms and signs caused by paraproteinemias. Among these signs, a bleeding tendency is one of the major fatal causes. However, significant severe bleeding is rare in most cases. In this study, we report a case of multiple myeloma in a patient who had a severe recurrent bleeding tendency due to platelet dysfunction caused by paraproteins. After being treated with therapeutic plasma exchange and chemotherapy, the pa
Purpose : Clinical and laboratory findings predict a severe outcome for mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome. This study aimed to define the clinical characteristics of Kawasaki disease (KD) patients with hyponatremia and to determine the factors associated with its development. Methods : Retrospective studies were performed on 114 KD patients who received an initial high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG, single 2 g/kg/dose) within 10 days of fever onset from January 2006 to February 2008. The
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate prophylactic treatment effects in Korean patients with severe hemophilia A. METHODS: A prospective study of 32 severe hemophilia A patients was conducted with the approval of the Institutional Review Board at the Eulji University Hospital. Two patients received primary prophylaxis; whereas, the other 30 patients were divided into 2 groups-secondary prophylaxis (n=15) and on-demand (n=15)-on the basis of their consent for secondary prophylaxis. Background: Human repeated insult patch tests (HRIPTs) are a final method for safety assessment of chemical ingredients. In the representative HRIPTs, the Shelanski and modified Dratze require 200 participants, but the maximization and modified maximization tests require only 25. Objective: To evaluate the safety of three sunscreen ingredients using the Shelanski and maximization methods. Methods: Octylmethoxycmnamate, butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane, and octyltriazone (BASF) were prepared for the
