Radiological Significance of Ligamentum Flavum Hypertrophy in the Occurrence of Redundant Nerve Roots of Central Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Objective : There were previous reports of redundant nerve roots (RNRs) focused on their clinical significance and pathogenesis. In this study, we investigated the significant radiologic findings that correlate with RNRs occurrence. These relations would provide an advanced clue for clinical significance and pathogenesis of RNRs. Methods : Retrospective research was performed with data from 126 patients who underwent surgery for central lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Finally,106 patients with com

Objective : We compared the clinical and radiographic outcomes of stand-alone polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cage and Zero-Profile anchored spacer (Zero-P) for single level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 121 patients who underwent single level ACDF within 2 years (Jan 2011–Jan 2013) in a single institute. Total 50 patients were included for the analysis who were evaluated more than 2-year follow-up. Twenty-nine patients were allocated to the ca

Risk Factors for Delayed Hinge Fracture after Plate-Augmented Cervical Open-Door Laminoplasty
Bum-Joon Kim, Hong Joo Moon, Joo Han Kim

Objective : Delayed hinge fracture (HF) that develops after cervical open door laminoplasty can be a source of postoperative complications such as axial pain. However, risk factors related to this complication remain unclear. We performed a retrospective clinical series to determine risk factors for delayed HF following plate-only open-door cervical laminoplasty. Methods : Patients who underwent plate-only open-door laminoplasty and had available postoperative computed tomography (CT) scans (80

Surgery versus Nerve Blocks for Lumbar Disc Herniation : Quantitative Analysis of Radiological Factors as a Predictor for Successful Outcomes
Joohyun Kim, 허준석, Jang-Bo Lee, 박정율

Objective : To assess the clinical and radiological factors as predictors for successful outcomes in lumbar disc herniation (LDH) treatment. Methods : Two groups of patients with single level LDH (L4–5) requiring treatment were retrospectively studied. The surgery group (SG) included 34 patients, and 30 patients who initially refused the surgery were included in the nerve blocks group (NG). A visual analogue scale (VAS) for leg and back pain and motor deficit were initially evaluated before proc

Unusual Fatal Infections after Anterior Cervical Spine Surgeries

We report two cases of cervical spinal epidural abscess (SEA), which are related to anterior cervical surgeries. The first case reveals a late postoperative infection without any predisposing factor. The second case reveals combined complication of infection and instrument failure (artificial disc). Both two cases manifested ascending infections that are unusual courses of anterior cervical infections. The abscess extended upwards and, finally, caused life threatening bacterial meningitis. We su

Meta Learning

이에 본 연구에서는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해, 미래 공변량을 포함한 ARX(AutoRegressive with eXogenous varables) 모델과 MLP(Multi-Layer Perceptron) 모델을 결합한 Meta Learning 기반 Stacking 앙상블 예측 기법을 제안한다.

As we get closer to super-aged society, the prevalence of senile spinal diseases is constantly increasing and the burden on individuals and society grows high. Senile spinal disease is basically degenerative in nature. Pain and physical dysfunction occur due to various complex pathologic causes. For the diagnosis and treatment of such complex diseases, it is essential to understand common senile spinal diseases such as intervertebral disc herniation and spinal stenosis. Degenerative changes in i

Evolution of CRISPR towards accurate and efficient mammal genome engineering

The evolution of genome editing technology based on CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) system has led to a paradigm shift in biological research. CRISPR/Cas9-guide RNA complexes enable rapid and efficient genome editing in mammalian cells. This system induces double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs) at target sites and most DNA breakages induce mutations as small insertions or deletions (indels) by non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) repair pathway. However, for more preci
