About the Lab
Professor Jung-Hoon Kim's research lab specializes in virology and infectious disease mechanisms, with a focus on understanding the molecular and cellular pathways of viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2 and avian influenza H7N9. The lab investigates viral entry mechanisms, host-virus interactions, and host factor dependencies—particularly involving proteins like ANO6 and ACE2/TMPRSS2—while also developing targeted antiviral strategies. Additionally, the lab applies computational and bioinformatics approaches to analyze viral genomics, translatomes, and human behavioral responses through digital data like online news comments, linking virology with public health informatics. Their work bridges basic virology with translational applications, including vaccine design and real-time disease modeling for pandemic preparedness.

COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which infected >200 million people resulting in >4 million deaths. However, temporal landscape of the SARS-CoV-2 translatome and its impact on the human genome remain unexplored. Here, we report a high-resolution atlas of the translatome and transcriptome of SARS-CoV-2 for various time points after infecting human cells. Intriguingly, substantial amount of SARS-CoV-2 translation initiates at a novel translation i
elevation and ANO6-dependent phosphatidylserine externalization in ACE2/TMPRSS2-positive mammalian cells. A high-throughput screening of drug-like chemical libraries identifies three different structural classes of chemicals showing ANO6 inhibitory effects. Among them, A6-001 displays the highest potency and ANO6 selectivity and it inhibits the single-round infection of SARS2-PsV in ACE2/TMPRSS2-positive HEK 293T cells. More importantly, A6-001 strongly inhibits authentic SARS-CoV-2-induced phos
Zoonotic avian influenza viruses pose severe health threats to humans. Of several viral subtypes reported, the low pathogenic avian influenza H7N9 virus has since February 2013 caused more than 1,500 cases of human infection with an almost 40% case-fatality rate. Vaccination of poultry appears to reduce human infections. However, the emergence of highly pathogenic strains has increased concerns about H7N9 pandemics. To develop an efficacious H7N9 human vaccine, we designed vaccine viruses by cha
As a public medium and one of the big data sources that is accumulated informally and real time, online news comments or replies are considered a significant resource to understand mentalities of article readers. The comments are also being regarded as an important medium of WOM (Word of Mouse) about products, services or the enterprises. If the diffusing effect of the comments is referred to as the degrees of agreement and disagreement from an angle of WOM, figuring out which characteristics of
The COVID-19 pandemic is threatening our quality of life and economic sustainability. The rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world requires each country or region to establish appropriate anti-proliferation policies in a timely manner. It is important, in making COVID-19-related health policy decisions, to predict the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients as accurately and quickly as possible. Predictions are already being made using several traditional models such as the susceptible, infected,
The existence of physical-world adversarial examples such as adversarial patches proves the vulnerability of real-world deep learning systems. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient adversarial attack algorithms to identify potential risks and build a robust system. The patch-based physical adversarial attack has shown its effectiveness in attacking neural network-based object detectors. However, the generated patches are quite perceptible for humans, violating the fundamental assumptio
This paper presents a low power SOC architecture for the v2.0+EDR (enhanced data rate) Bluetooth SOC and its applications. Our design includes a link controller, modem, RF transceiver, sub-band codec (SBC), Expended Instruction Set Computer (ESIC) processor and peripherals. According to increasing mobile applications, power consumption is more important features. To reduce power consumption, we use a reduction of data transfer using dual-port memory, clock management unit and a clock gated appro
With the advent of text analytics, VOC (Voice of Customer) data become an important resource which provides the managers and marketing practitioners with consumer's veiled opinion and requirements. In other words, making relevant use of VOC data potentially improves the customer responsiveness and satisfaction, each of which eventually improves business performance. However, unstructured data set such as customers' complaints in VOC data have seldom used in marketing practices such as predicting
The first chapter shows that small business owners in credit markets, in particular minority owners, have difficulty in securing sources of capital for their business operation in spite of their economic importance. The literature on credit market discrimination shows consistent results that can be interpreted as evidence that minority owners are discriminated against compared to their counterparts (i.e., white owners) in obtaining loans, which may be caused by lenders' discrimination, although
545 Objectives We performed this study to evaluate predictive value of pretreatment F-18 FDG PET/CT for progression free survival (PFS) in patients with gastric cancer. Methods We enrolled retrospectively 97 patients (M:F=61:36, age: 59.8±13.2 yrs) with a diagnosis of gastric cancer, who underwent pretreatment FDG PET/CT from January 2009 to December 2009. SUVmax was measured from each case with detectable primary lesion. In remaining non-detectable cases, SUVmax measured from corresponding site
