About the Lab
Professor Jung Kyu Han's research lab specializes in vascular biology and regenerative medicine, with a focus on endothelial cell biology, endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), and the molecular mechanisms regulating vascular repair and angiogenesis. The lab investigates nuclear receptor signaling—particularly PPAR-δ— in modulating EPC function and paracrine communication with endothelial and skeletal muscle cells. It also explores cellular reprogramming strategies to generate functional endothelial cells from somatic cells, aiming to advance cell-based therapies for ischemic vascular diseases.

15BACKGROUND: Cell-based therapies to augment endothelial cells (ECs) hold great therapeutic promise. Here, we report a novel approach to generate functional ECs directly from adult fibroblasts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven candidate genes that are key regulators of endothelial development were selected. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-negative skin fibroblasts were prepared from Tie2-GFP mice and infected with lentiviruses allowing simultaneous overexpression of all 11 factors. Tie2-GFP(+) cells (
BACKGROUND: Despite the therapeutic potential of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in ischemic vascular diseases, their insufficient numbers limit clinical applications. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-delta belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, and its functions in various tissues and cells are almost unexplored, especially with respect to vascular biology. METHODS AND RESULTS: PPAR-delta activation in EPCs phosphorylated Akt, and this phosphorylation was medi
Background: Limited data are available on short-term dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention using third-generation drug-eluting stents with ultrathin struts and advanced polymer technology. We investigated whether 3- to 6-month DAPT was noninferior to 12-month DAPT after implantation of drug-eluting stents with ultrathin struts and advanced polymer technology. Methods: We performed an open-label, randomized trial at 37 centers in South Korea. We enrolled patien
AIMS: The roles of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-δ in vascular biology are mainly unknown. We investigated the effects of PPAR-δ activation on the paracrine networks between endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and endothelial cells (ECs)/skeletal muscle. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatment of EPCs with GW501516, a PPAR-δ agonist, induced specifically matrix metallo-proteinase (MMP)-9 by direct transcriptional activation. Subsequently, this increased-MMP-9 broke down insulin-like g
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the ideal cut-off value of minimal lumen area (MLA) by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and its diagnostic performance to predict ischemia, using a large-scale, pooled analysis. METHODS: Eleven centers worldwide were invited to provide their clinical, IVUS and fractional flow reserve (FFR) data. A total of 881 lesions were enrolled. RESULTS: Angiographic % diameter stenosis (r = -0.373, p < 0.0001) and IVUS MLA (r = 0.289, p < 0.0001) correlated with FFR. Best cut-of
In recommending to another individual an item that one loves, accuracy is important, however in most cases, focusing only on accuracy generates less satisfactory recommendations. Studies have repeatedly pointed out that aspects that go beyond accuracy — such as the diversity and novelty of the recommended items — are as important as accuracy in making a satisfactory recommendation. Despite their importance, there is no global consensus about definitions and evaluations regarding beyond-accuracy
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The authors investigated the impact of smoking and its cessation after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: Using a nationwide database from the Korean National Health Insurance System, 74 471 patients undergoing PCI between 2009 and 2016 were classified as non-, ex-, or current smokers, depending on smoking status at the first health check-up within 1 year after PCI. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovas
Hadoop becomes de facto standard framework for big data analysis due to its scalability. Despite of the importance of Hadoop's scalability, there are a few works have been made on the scalability in multi-rack clusters. In multi-rack clusters of real world, network topology becomes a major scalability bottleneck due to the limited network switch capacity. It is a waste of resources to add servers to a Hadoop cluster in such situation. Therefore, it is helpful for users to save cost by efficientl
In recommending POIs(Point-Of-Interests), factors such as the diversity of the recommended POIs are as important as accuracy for providing a satisfactory recommendation. Although existing diversification methods can help POI recommender systems suggest more diverse POIs, they lack "geographical diversification," which results in the concentration of the supposedly "diverse" recommended POIs on "a small portion" in areas where the target-user is most active. This is caused by the neglect of POI l
In the personalized Point-Of-Interest (POI) (or venue) recommendation, the diversity of recommended POIs is an important aspect. Diversity is especially important when POIs are recommended in the target users’ frequently visited areas, because users are likely to revisit such areas. In addition to the (POI) category diversity that is a popular diversification objective in recommendation domains, diversification of recommended POI locations is an interesting subject itself. Despite its importance
From this study, there was a tendency cyst wall with the history of infection or incision and drainage is thicker. When surgical excision, more attention to excise epidermal cyst completely is needed for the prevention of recurrence of the cyst.
