About the Lab
Professor Jung-Han Lee's research lab focuses on the neurobiological underpinnings of behavioral addictions, particularly Internet gaming disorder and problematic smartphone use, with an emphasis on structural and functional brain abnormalities in adolescents. The lab investigates how impulsivity, emotion regulation, and executive control deficits relate to gray matter volume changes and altered functional connectivity in key brain networks such as the default mode, salience, and executive control networks. Their work combines neuroimaging techniques like voxel-based morphometry and fMRI with clinical and psychological assessments to uncover neural mechanisms underlying addictive behaviors.

15BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is photo-treatment of malignant or benign diseases using photosensitizing agents, light, and oxygen which generates cytotoxic reactive oxygens and induces tumour regressions. Several photodynamic treatments have been extensively studied and the photosensitizers (PS) are key to their biological efficacy, while laser and oxygen allow to appropriate and flexible delivery for treatment of diseases. INTRODUCTION: In presence of oxygen and the specific light trig
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to analyze clinical impact factors on the survival rate, and to acquire basic clinical data for the diagnosis of oral cancer, for a determination of the treatment plan with long-term survival in oral cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a retrospective review of the medical records, the factors for long-term survival rate were analyzed. Thirty-seven patients, among patient database with oral cancer treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillof
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smartphone use is becoming commonplace and exerting adequate control over smartphone use has become an important mental health issue. Little is known about the neurobiology underlying problematic smartphone use. We hypothesized that structural abnormalities in the fronto-cingulate brain region could be implicated in problematic smartphone use, similar to that has been reported for Internet gaming disorder and Internet addiction. This study investigated fronto-cingulate gray
Reduced executive control is one of the central components of model on the development and maintenance of Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Among the various executive control problems, high impulsivity has consistently been associated with IGD. We performed voxel-based morphometric analysis with diffeomorphic anatomical registration by using an exponentiated Lie algebra algorithm (DARTEL) to investigate the relationship of gray matter abnormalities to impulsivity in IGD. Thirty-one young male adu
Increased reports of impulsivity and aggression in male adolescents with Internet gaming might reflect their dysfunction in emotion regulation, particularly in suppression of negative emotions, which should affect the various stages of Internet gaming disorder. This study tested the hypothesis that adolescents with Internet gaming disorder would be more disturbed by the emotional interference and demonstrate compromised dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) activation during a Stroop Match-to-
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The clinical significance of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is spreading worldwide, but its underlying neural mechanism still remains unclear. Moreover, the prevalence of IGD seems to be the highest in adolescents whose brains are in development. This study investigated the functional connectivity between large-scale intrinsic networks including default mode network, executive control network, and salience network. We hypothesized that adolescents with IGD would demonstrate
Prolyl endopeptidase (PEP, EC 3.4.21.26) hydrolyzes proline-containing neuropeptides, such as vasopressin, substance P, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), and is suggested to participate in learning and memory processes. Ginkgo biloba leaves, upon examination for anti-amnestic constituents as new types of PEP inhibitors, showed significant PEP inhibition. PEP activity-guided fractionation and column chromatography of the MeOH extracts of G. biloba leaves resulted in the isolation of 6-(8'Z
The excessive use of smartphones is associated with various medical complications and mental health problems. However, existing research findings on neurobiological mechanisms behind problematic smartphone use are limited. In this study, we investigated functional connectivity in problematic smartphone users, focusing on the default mode network (DMN) and attentional networks. We hypothesized that problematic smartphone users would have alterations in functional connectivity between the DMN and
The clinical heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is closely associated with the diversity of genes related to ASD pathogenesis. With their low effect size, it has been hard to define the role of common variants of genes in ASD phenotype. In this study, we reviewed genetic results and clinical scores widely used for ASD diagnosis to investigate the role of genes in ASD phenotype considering their functions in molecular pathways. Genetic data from next-generation sequencing (NGS) were
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests. Identifying the genetic background may be one of the key features for the future diagnosis and treatment of ASD. With the tremendous development in genetic diagnosis techniques, next-generation sequencing (NGS) can be used to analyze multiple genes simultaneously with a single test in laboratory and clinical settings and is we
AIM: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one option for treating refractory Tourette syndrome (TS); however, it remains unclear which preoperative factors are predictive of DBS outcomes. This study investigated the efficacy of DBS targeting the anteromedial globus pallidus internus and evaluated predisposing factors affecting the outcomes of DBS in a single center in Korea. METHOD: Twenty patients who had undergone DBS for refractory TS were reviewed retrospectively. Tic symptoms were followed up at
