About the Lab

Professor Jung-Sun Kim's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and metabolic disease mechanisms, with a focus on the cardiorenal protective effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. The lab investigates the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic pathways underlying these benefits, particularly through modulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and interleukin-1β signaling. Additional research directions include cardiac function improvement in diabetes using pharmacological agents, and the application of advanced imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) to study stent healing and vascular remodeling. The lab also explores natural products with therapeutic potential, including marine-derived polyacetylenic compounds.

SGLT2 inhibition modulates NLRP3 inflammasome activity via ketones and insulin in diabetes with cardiovascular disease

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce cardiovascular events in humans with type 2 diabetes (T2D); however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Activation of the NLR family, pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and subsequent interleukin (IL)-1β release induces atherosclerosis and heart failure. Here we show the effect of SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on NLRP3 inflammasome activity. Patients with T2D and high cardiovascular risk receive SGLT2 inhibitor or sulfon

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported improved diastolic function in patients administered sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). We aimed to investigate the effect of dapagliflozin on left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in a diabetic animal model and to determine the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying its function. METHODS: A total of 30 male New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into control, diabetes, or diabetes+dapagliflozin groups (n = 10/per each group).

AIMS: Although optical coherence tomography (OCT) is capable to detect microscopic peri-strut changes that seem to be related to neointimal inhibition and healing, its ability to characterize these components is still limited. In this study, we aimed to compare different OCT morphological characteristics with different in-stent neointimal tissue types analysed by histology. METHODS: A total of 69 stents (39 drug eluting and 30 bare metal stents) were implanted in coronary arteries of 27 swine. B

SJR Q1Journal of Natural Products

Three C46 (1-3) and three C30 (4-6) polyacetylenic alcohols with cytotoxic activity against a small panel of human solid-tumor cell lines have been isolated from the marine sponge Petrosia sp. Although compound 1 was identified as the stereoisomer of petrocortyne A, the structures of compounds 2-5 have not been previously reported and were established by spectral methods. Compound 6 was identified as the known compound petrosiacetylene D. The stereochemistry of compounds 1-5 was determined by th

AIMS: This study evaluated the effect of moderate-intensity statin with ezetimibe combination therapy vs. high-intensity statin monotherapy among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a pre-specified, stratified subgroup analysis of the DM cohort in the RACING trial. The primary outcome was a 3-year composite of cardiovascular death, major cardiovascular events, or non-fatal stroke. Among total patients, 1398 (37.0%
